PRE-LABOUR
WHAT HAPPENS INSIDE
Your cervix will begin to soften and open slightly. Contractions are short, mild and irregular and may be felt as slight backache or period-like pain low on the abdomen.
OTHER SIGNS
■ Increased vaginal discharge
■ Sudden weight loss
■ Nagging backache
EMOTIONS
You may sense that something is different, but deny that it may be the start of labour. You also may become more lethargic and sedentary.
SELF-HELP
Do not start anything strenuous. Rest as much as you can and focus on breathing deeply. Eat small, high energy foods. Keep well hydrated.
STAGE ONE LATENT LABOUR 0 TO 6CM
WHAT HAPPENS INSIDE
Cervix continues to thin out (efface) and open up (dilate). Contractions are five to 20 minutes apart and last from 20 to 50 seconds.
