NEWS REPORT

Hi all, hope you had a good summer and are enjoying the New England fall weather that is leading us right into the next trapping Season!

President Fred Becker and Donna and Ray Peck attended Neil Olsen’s New England Trappers Weekend held August 17th – 19th in Bethel, Maine. Neil also hosted the The NTA Northeast Regional Convention at the same time. The CTA had a booth that served both events, that was set up and manned by Fred, Donna and Ray. Thank you very much “Lady and Gentlemen!” Fred had a chance to talk to two notables who were in attendance, Tom Miranda and Tucker Carlson. Tom congratulated Fred for winning the NTA East Trapper of the Year award and signed the back of the plaque. It is great to see the notoriety that the CTA is gaining in the trapping world! So, let’s all keep up the good work!

The CTA attended and had booths at three Connecticut fall fairs.

The first was the Bridgewater Fair held August 17-20, 2023, at the Bridgewater Fire Department. Many thanks to the following CTA members who set up and manned the booth, John McGrath, Darrell Gallant and Vinny Renzulli.

The second was the Woodstock Fair held Sept. 1-4, 2023, at the Woodstock fair grounds. This fair is always well attended by people who understand and support trapping. Many thanks to the following CTA members who manned and set up the booth, Bob Andryzeck, Fred Rich, Jacob Conshick, Rich Schenk, Barry Sullivan, Ray and Donna Peck, Beth Casanova and Rob Lee.

The third event was the Hebron Fair held Sept. 7th - 11, 2023, at the Hebron Lions Club fairgrounds. This fair was very well attended by people from central Connecticut. Again, many thanks to the following CTA members who manned and set up the booth, Bob Andryzeck, Ray and Donna Peck, Jacob Conshick, Beth Casanova, Rob Lee, Tip Garritt, Sally Balukas.

At this point, I would I like to give a very special THANK YOU to Donna Peck, Ray Peck, Bob Andryzeck and John McGrath for all the special extra time and work they put in transporting, setting up and taking down the booths at each event, plus making all the arrangements for CTA representation at these fairs.

On Saturday September 9th, the CTA held a very successful CTA trapper training course at CTA Vice President West, Jules Perreault’s home in Wallingford. The classes started at 8 a.m. and lasted until 3 p.m. The fee was $20.00 per person and a $5.00 donation for lunch. 21 trappers including two women attended. The following topics were covered, Trap Preparation- Jules Perreault, Use of the Dog-Proof Raccoon Trap-Rob Lee, Actual Skinning of a Raccoon – Rob Lee, Coyote Land Trapping-Scott Kneeland, Use of the Comstock and Hancock Cage Traps in Trapping Beaver-Scott Kneeland, Successful Sets for Beaver, Otter, Mink and Muskrat-Fred Becker and Actual Skinning of a Beaver-Fred Becker.

John McGrath was present to assist throughout the day. Many thanks to all the CTA members who made this effort so successful.

Assuming you will read this before, the CTA Annual Fall Convention will be held on Oct. 7, 2023, as usual at the Fin, Fur and Feather Club in Chaplin, CT, on Chewink Road. 8:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.

All of you have a super trapping season and consider how lucky we are to live in beautiful New England and commune with nature and to know in this “small” state we have healthy populations of otter,
