TRAPLINE GUNS

Out of all of the ways to dispatch our catches humanely, it is mostly agreed the gun is the best and quickest when the trap doesn’t do the job for us. So, what is it that we should look for in a trapline gun?

THE .22

The .22 rimfire has long been the trapper’s primary tool for dispatching animals. How many times have you seen photos of a trapper with a trusty .22 on his side or in his pack? I learned to shoot with a .22 rifle, and when I was a kid, I was seldom without it. I still have the Remington Nylon 66 rifle from when I was around 14 or 15 years old, and it still accompanies me on the line occasionally.

A rifle is less convenient to pack around than a pistol, but it will get the job done and will also take a forest grouse now and then for dinner. By far, though,
