TREE OF LIFE MEDALLION QUILT

BEHIND THE QUILT

GROW YOUR SKILLS

“For the 100th edition of the magazine, I wanted to create something a little bit special – combining a number of different techniques and blocks. I chose a medallion design – as medallions require more work, more techniques and create more interest. The centre of the design is a Tree of Life block, which consists of lots of half-square triangles. In addition, there is a circle of Flying Geese around the Tree of Life block, which is foundation paper pieced. Around the Tree of Life and Flying Geese are eight (8) Mariner’s Compass blocks (also foundation paper pieced), followed by corners made up of more half-square triangles. The final round of blocks is also created using half-square triangles and are in frames to make them stand out against the background. In this pattern, you use various techniques, such as making half-square triangles in sets of twelve on paper, foundation paper piecing both in the circle of Flying Geese and the Mariner’s Compasses, curved piecing and the traditional piecing used to put the Tree of Life and outer circle blocks together.” – Lynne Goldsworthy
