Like many businesses, Pure SEO had humble beginnings. When Richard Conway kicked off the company in October 2009, he had only recently emigrated to New Zealand from the UK with wife Emily. Both had fallen in love with the country while holidaying here in their early 20s.

Initially he worked from the corner of a friend's desk in an office in Auckland's Madden Street.

His CV included working as a venture analyst and in commercial property, as well as managing an online service office brokerage.
