MEDITATION MADE EASY
Meditation is widely regarded as one of the most powerful tools in mental wellbeing, a process which its advocates say anyone can learn and harness to make themselves feel calmer and more centred. In fact, a July 2021 paper in Psychological Research found that just ten minutes of mindfulness meditation for ten days – in which participants focused on the present moment and attempted to quiet thought patterns by noticing their breath and coming back to it when distracted – helped reduce the negative impact of over-exposure to news about Covid-19.
“Regular meditation creates a dedicated moment and space to be more in-tune with ourselves,” says Cornell Verdeja-Woodson, director of diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging at the hugely popular guided meditation app, Headspace. “That includes our feelings, our needs and our body. As a result of being more in tune with what our body needs, we are able to engage in self-care, which leads to increased happiness, improved health and stronger relationships with folks around us.”
