US orders evacuation of most embassy personnel in Ukraine as Biden and Putin talk
WASHINGTON — The U.S. government on Saturday ordered the evacuation of most of its embassy personnel and all American citizens from Ukraine as President Joe Biden spoke by phone with Russian leader Vladimir Putin amid dire signs that a Russian invasion could be imminent.
“It is increasingly likely that this is where this current situation is headed — towards some kind of active conflict,” a senior Biden administration official said. “It isn’t just time to leave Ukraine. It is past time for private citizens to leave Ukraine.
“We unfortunately are seeing increasing signs that we’re heading toward those worst-case scenarios,” said the official in a background briefing with reporters. The official added that “we’re not going to be in a position in those worst-case
