THE THREE WINNERS OF THE 2021 KOREA YOUNG ARCHITECT AWARD ANNOUNCED
On July 20, the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism (MCST) announced the winners of the 2021 Korea Young Architect Award; apparat-c (co-principals, Lee Sewoong, Choi Yeonwoong), GUBO Architects (principal, Cho Yoonhee), and No. 643) introduced ‘peridot’ which has a pitched roof that is likely to be used for a barn on top of a structure reminiscent of the Parthenon; an ‘urban retreat’ developing ideas about interior and exterior space of detached houses; and ‘moai’ which is composed of a flexible space. The award selection committee said, ‘Expressing the emotion of contemporary Korean society, their works show a novel means of design, and outstanding ability to solve problems’. GUBO Architects said, ‘We try to observe our city from a daily point of view, find sectors in disorder, and intervene to restore order’. The office showed ‘Seogye-dong Villa Zip’, a work about entrance design on a slope, ‘Work From Home’, vertically stacked rental units, and ‘Collective Mine’, shared housing in Gungjeong (covered in No. 629). The award selection committee highly praised ‘the awareness of problems that seek to solve urban problems through the social role of architecture, perfection of work, and ability to solve’. Proclaiming ‘We want to create architecture blended with nature’, Archihood W×Y presented ‘Voree’, a low building to avoid hiding an outlook over the sea, ‘Doo Jip’, a house with external space and openings to control privacy (covered in No. 632). The award selection committee noted that ‘they provided a reasonable solution under the given circumstances with consistency based on skilled design’. In addition to MCST Award, the three winners will receive the opportunity to hold an exhibition of their works, publish a collection of works, and participate in architectural events home and abroad. The award ceremony will be held at the 2021 KIA Convention & Exhibition in Nov.
