It’s not hard to see why our stress levels may be a little higher than usual during this difficult winter. In fact, at least half a million people in the UK are predicted to experience mental health concerns as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic. Worryingly, we know from research that stress can lead to increased blood sugar levels, increased risk of insulin resistance and resultant type-2 diabetes and obesity. If we understand the science of stress, identify the primary sources in our own lives and take steps to implement coping strategies, however, there is much we can do to protect (and even improve) our health during these trying times.
