Spectacular scenery in a perfect place for touring and enjoying outdoor pursuits. Oh, and sunshine in December…

Kia ora! Welcome to New Zealand, a country of dramatic landscapes, endless coastline and incredible volcanic activity, reminding us of nature’s powerful presence across these two islands in the south-west Pacific.

This was our fourth trip to this wonderful land and this time, we were making the tour in our own self-build campervan (see p106).

Our explorations of the North Island started in Auckland, the largest city in New Zealand and main arrival point for international visitors.

We set out on foot, through the busy shopping streets, and soon arrived at the 328m Sky Tower, where we watched adrenaline junkies base-jump from the top. Of course, this is one of the most adventurous countries in the world!

Approaching the wharf, we decided to take one of the regular foot ferries to Waiheke Island, just 35 minutes away. The last time we were here, we spotted a couple of orca whales in the bay;
