Just a few months after Nompumelelo’s 40th birthday, her mother unexpectedly passed away. The shock of losing her mom took a huge emotional toll; for a year she felt depressed and unhappy. What made it worse was the fact that she was heavier than she’d ever been (83kg) and was no longer fitting into her clothes. ‘It was stressful trying to find something to wear every day, and I was breathing heavily with every step. That’s when I decided I had to get serious about losing weight.’ Nompumelelo does quick daily workouts (‘they are usually a mixture of HIIT, cardio and weights’) and dramatically reduced her carb intake, especially white carbs. ‘I used to get bloated from eating a lot of carbs, but since reducing the amount and incorporating wholemeal carbs I’ve felt a lot better,’ she says.
She also lives by well-known American nutritionist Adelle Davis’s advice: ‘Eat breakfast like a king, lunch like a prince and dine like a pauper’.
