agent of CHANGE
IF you’re interested in the small stuff that makes us who we are, stalking Debra Roberts on social media is not rewarding. There are no signs of a personal Instagram nor a Twitter account, and very little that explains how this Durban-based woman has found herself to be one of the key global figures in the climate change sector.
Debra wears many hats, all of them equally impressive and important. The most high-profile one is her position as co-chair of one of three working groups of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). This United Nations body released a Special Report in October 2018 outlining the implications of limiting global warming to 1.5 C above pre-industrial levels in order to avoid the potentially irreversible effects of climate change. It’s a pretty gloomy report – what isn’t gloomy is the work that so many people are doing to avoid the worst-case scenario.
