SPARKLINGS BUBBLING ALONG NICELY

THE global interest in sparkling wine appears to be effervescing unabated. Prosecco, for sure, is driving growth, but opportunities also exist from other countries. Added to which predictions are also for high quality to be one of the factors pushing growth forward.

Possibly with an eye to communicate this prize, an organisation in Germany created a classification for its members’ sparkling wines earlier this year. The VDP (the Association of German Pradikat Wine Estates) is a voluntary group of a sizeable chunk of Germany’s high quality producers. It has introduced a sparkling wine (sekt) classification for its members, which mirrors the pyramid hierarchy that already exists for its still wines.
