Description
Episode 120: Overcoming Job Search Rejection
Hey everyone, and welcome back to Coaching for Millennials where we talk about all things career, success, and navigating those tricky life transitions. Today, we're diving into a topic that I know so many people struggle with – and I've struggled with it myself – the overwhelming sense of rejection and frustration that comes with a difficult job search.
If you feel like you've sent out hundreds of resumes, maybe gotten a few interviews, but those offers just don't seem to materialize, you're not alone. I'm going to break down exactly why job search rejection can be so soul-crushing, what you can do to manage the emotional side, and those actionable steps to improve your chances and stay in the game.
Segment 1: Why Job Rejection Hurts So Bad
Personalization: It's easy to feel that a rejection is a judgment of YOU, not just your skills or fit for the specific job.
Loss of Control: The job search often feels like you aren't in the driver's seat, and that compounds when you're faced with rejection.
Ego Bruising: Let's face it, your career is tied into your self-worth, and rejection can sting that pride.
Segment 2: Coping Strategies for Rejection
It's NOT personal (most of the time): Companies have countless reasons for not choosing you, many totally unrelated to your talent.
Give Yourself Time to Feel: It's okay to be disappointed, even angry. Vent to a trusted friend, go for a run, scream into a pillow. Then, time to refocus.
Focus on Controllables: You CAN'T control hiring decisions, but you CAN control the quality of your applications, your effort, your skills development.
Small Wins Matter: Did you tailor a cover letter especially well? Celebrate it! Small wins keep your momentum alive.
Segment 3: Staying Positive and Standing Out
Targeted Applications: Quality over quantity, folks. Deeply research jobs that are a TRUE fit and customize your materials for each.
Keywords are King: Your resume and cover letter must align with the job posting's lingo – they use software to scan these.
Networking Power: It sounds old school, but real human connections matter. LinkedIn, professional groups, even informational interviews.
The Skills Upgrade: Be honest – is there some training, software, or a relevant skill you could build to boost your appeal?
