But I like the definition provided by mentalhealth.gov (US Department of Health and Human Services): “Mental health includes our emotional, psychological, and social well-being. It affects how we think, feel, and act. It also helps determine how we handle stress, relate to others, and make choices. Mental health is important at every stage of life, from childhood and adolescence through adulthood.”Does Stigma Prevent People From Seeking Treatment? When we talk about stigma related to mental health issues, we are referring to a complex concept that encompasses negative beliefs, attitudes, and actions. These negative perceptions can lead to bias, prejudice, and discrimination against individuals who are dealing with mental health concerns. There is clear evidence from various large-scale surveys that stigma plays a significant role in preventing individuals from accessing appropriate mental health care. This stigma acts as a barrier, discouraging people from seeking the help they need. What is the Biggest Barrier to Ending Stigma?Ending stigma can be a challenging task, comparable to addressing issues like poverty, hunger, or war due to its deep-rooted nature. One of the major challenges we face when it comes to addressing mental health stigma is the lack of awareness among many individuals. Most people are not even aware that there is a problem with stigmatizing individuals with mental health issues. This lack of recognition hinders progress in tackling stigma effectively. What is the Most Effective Way to Combat Stigma?Raising awareness and providing education are crucial starting points in addressing stigma and its harmful impact on individuals. By spreading the word about the negative effects of stigma, we can help initiate meaningful change. Additionally, it is essential to gather personal accounts from those who have experienced mental health services to humanize the issue and give it a voice.NEXT EPISODE: Mental Health Q & A, Part 4Change your thinking, change your life!Laugh hard, run fast, be kind.  David R.
