Description

As part of our "Forbes Minute" series, spotlighting thought-provoking Forbes videos and their key takeaways, Dr. Westover explores Kourtney Whitehead's recent Forbes video, "Mayor Tubbs: The Most Effective Act Of Leadership Is Listening." See the video and details here: https://youtu.be/8DEiT-BPMv0.  Video Overview: "At 27, Stockton, CA's Michael Tubbs is the city's youngest-ever and first African-American mayor. 'What was the point of going to Stanford if it wasn't for making my community better?'" On November 8, 2016, Michael Tubbs was elected to serve as the mayor of the City of Stockton, California. Upon taking office in January 2017, Tubbs became both Stockton’s youngest mayor and the city’s first African-American mayor. Tubbs is also the youngest mayor in the history of the country representing a city with a population of more than 100,000 residents. In his first year as mayor, Tubbs secured $20 million to launch Stockton Scholars, a place-based scholarship that aims to triple the number of Stockton students entering and graduating from college. Tubbs also brought Advance Peace to Stockton — that data-driven program works to reduce gun violence in communities. And in an innovative public-private partnership supported by a $1 million grant, Tubbs launched the nation’s first ever mayor-led guaranteed income pilot. Before becoming mayor, Tubbs served as Stockton’s District 6 City Councilmember. As a councilmember, Tubbs created the Reinvent South Stockton Coalition, championed the creation of the city’s Office of Violence Prevention and was part of the council that led the city out of bankruptcy as Chair of the Audit and Legislative Committee. Mayor Tubbs earned his bachelor’s degree at Stanford University, and also received a master’s degree in Policy, Organization and Leadership Studies from Stanford’s Graduate School of Education. Tubbs has been a college course instructor for Aspire Public Schools and a Fellow at the Stanford Institute of Design and the Emerson Collective.
