Ogilvy syndrome is a functional rather than a mechanical obstruction of the large intestine. It involves dilatation of the colon, so the colon becomes very dilated. The most common symptom is abdominal distension, where the abdomen becomes very enlarged. Nausea and vomiting can also occur, so it can look like an obstruction.
