Celiac disease is also known as gluten sensitive enteropathy and celiac sprue. It is a gastrointestinal disease involving autoimmune destruction of small bowel mucos, leading to malabsorption and changes in bowel habits. The part of the small intestine that gets most affected, or most commonly affected is the proximal small intestine.
