The San Francisco Giants played a pretty ugly season-opening series against the Yankees. The Giants were completely shut down twice, and in their one win, they nearly let a three-run ninth-inning lead slip away. The Giants' offense struck out in 37% of their plate appearances in the series, which is just too high—but it's also something that won't last.
The unsustainability of the Giants' offensive struggles are discussed. When all is said and done, the Giants will strike out roughly 22-25% of the time this year, nothing close to the 37% we saw over the weekend. Putting more balls in play will translate to more hits and more home runs.
Camilo Doval needs to work on dealing with the pitch clock, as we saw in his first appearance. Doval was charged with two automatic balls to begin at-bats, which didn't pair well with his subpar command he had that day. Doval looked like he was going to cost the Giants the win, but got a well-timed 6-4-3 double play to end the game in torturous fashion. In other news, Joey Bart was placed on the 10-day IL with a mid-back sprain.
