Description

Cissa Paz
Singer-songwriter Cissa Paz has made a name for herself in Washington DC as an eclectic performer influenced by the local jazz sounds and her Brazilian African-Indigenous background. Nominated for 3 Wammies, her debut album gained great organic momentum. Cissa’s captivating stage presence and soulful voice bring music that is upbeat and engaging. She’s known and loved among the lovers  and dancers of Brazilian music not only as a performer, but as an ambassador of her genre. Her music a combination of Afro-Brazilian base with funky and soulful influences. A musical melting pot of fresh collaborations with highly acclaimed artists from her home country.
Born in Belgium by chance, Cissa was raised mostly in Rio de Janeiro. She began her musical love affair by spending afternoons with the sounds of Caetano Veloso, Gilberto Gil, Elis Regina and other Brazilian greats coming from her parents’ record player. She would get home after school and rush the vinyls, memorizing all her favorite lyrics. She absorbed every note, riff, and samba beat. Her musical tastes matured as she kept sampling the musical landscape of the world. Cissa’s sound is influenced by afoxé, forro, maracatu and the popular music of Brazil. Later on, she became more interested in the big rock stars like Led Zepplin, Guns and Roses, Alice and Chains to name a few. A even later, after moving to the U.S. at age 17, she fell in love with R&B, Soul and Hip Hop. There’s no end to the possibilities of interesting rhythms and prose that will emerge from her upcoming projects.
A world traveler, Cissa immersed herself in the musical culture of five continents. She performs songs in Portuguese, Portuguese Creole, Spanish, French and English.
Currently living in DC, her musical passion has turned into a full blown career. Cissa has blessed audiences, venues and festivals around the East Coast. Her voice, spirit and presence meld into a delicious blend delighting audiences everywhere. Her current focus is on her her solo project, with which her album is expected to be released in the Summer of 2014 – she has joined forces with some contemporary Rio de Janeiro-based musicians and they are currently writing and arranging a new repertoire to perform around the world.
