Description

After a hiatus of several years, the original APBA Football Club is back in action. Launched on Facebook in January 2011 by Geoff Giordano, the AFC serves not only the APBA Football community but the APBA community at large with a combination of playing tips, game history, interviews with leading voices of Hall of Famers and longtime players and other unique content geared to promoting the game and its current and new fans. Here, we offer our take on the game of APBA Football in our absence of roughly five years.

In this inaugural episode, we talk about the APBA Football audience figures we're seeing in the gaming world, suggestions to help promote the game outside the Delphi forums (our original goal) and some history of the game (gleaned from our personal work in cataloguing original games and boards as well as interviewing the folks who were there with company founder J. Richard Seitz).

In our original run from 2011-2016, the APBA Football Club:

• Interviewed numerous APBA Hall of Famers and notables like Ed Zack, John Cochrane, Pete Simonelli, Veryl Lincoln, Skeet Carr, Roy Langhans, Len Gaydos and Jack "The Cardfather" Kohn
• Interviewed key APBA Football thinkers like Mark Zarb, Dave Urban, Denny Hodge and Art Carter
• Covered the fan-held APBA annual tournament in founding city Lancaster, conducting interviews and live Tweeting competition results (we believe for the first time in APBA history)
• Built one of the most comprehensive APBA Football collections, including many sets from Hall of Famer Robert Henry's collection, as well as many vintage bowling, saddle racing, golf and basketball games
• Began drafting an APBA Football Handbook to complement Ed Zack's APBA baseball handbook
• Created APBA features and series including "APBA Icons, "On the Road," "APBA Firsts," "APBA Combine" and "Show Us Your Setup"
• Created the first contemporary football-only APBA Football competition at the Pro Football Hall of Fame in Canton in August 2013, featuring a combination of how-to-play demonstrations with a mini single-elimination tournament won by Greg Wells, as well as John Cochrane's demo of the APBA Soccer game and the National Card Football League's demo of its play-by-Skype method (well before the pandemic)
• Nominated Greg Barath and Ray Dunlap to the APBA Hall of Fame in 2014
• FInished second to Mike McCune in the global NCFL Skype tournament (1989 Forty-Niners 30, 2007 Patriots 24)
