Description

In this episode, Cherise is joined by Jeff Dreyfus, Principal and Whitney Hudson, Project Architect from Bushman Dreyfus Architects in Charlottesville, Virginia. Jeff and Whitney share their insights into their recent work on Six Hundred West Main, an urban mixed-use project in Charlottesville, VA. The new building has 53 apartments, an art gallery, lobby, courtyard, underground parking and retail space. The building is built next to two renovated historic buildings that house a locally-famous diner and a wine shop with offices and apartments above. Six Hundred consists of various steel textures on the façade, a concrete structure for the parking and ground floor levels, and wood frame construction above. This project provided unique challenges and opportunities - a Special Use Permit was required for increased density, the historic district and adjacent existing structures prompted a design review process with the local Board of Architectural Review through to project completion, the owners - a married team of developer and artist - pushed for a forward-thinking urban apartment building that contrasted the historic district, and much more.
