Description
For our first episode of the season, I’m super thrilled to announce a conversation with one of my gut heroes, the incredible gastroenterologist, Dr. Robynne Chutkan! In this episode, we cover what an integrative approach to gut health actually looks like. (Spoiler alert: it means using nutrition, movement, and stress management in addition to appropriate medications—instead of shunning one for the other.) We also talk about what you need to make good poops, Dr. Chutkan’s opinion on probiotics, and the role of the microbiome in health!
About Dr. Robynne Chutkan:
Dr. Chutkan is an integrative gastroenterologist and the author of Gutbliss, The Microbiome Solution and The Bloat Cure. Educated at Yale and Columbia, she’s on faculty at Georgetown Hospital—and is the founder of the Digestive Center for Wellness and Gutbliss.com. Her expertise includes the microbiome, autoimmune diseases, and gut disorders in women. An avid (but not so flexible) yogi, runner, and squash player, she’s a passionate advocate for more dirt, sweat, and vegetables.
On this episode we chat about:
How to take a truly integrative approach that includes nutrition, movement, and stress management for gut health.
Understanding when medications are important for digestive conditions
How a good poop is similar to a diamond! (yep, tune in to hear Dr. Chutkan’s reasons why!)
The four ‘C’s of a good poop: Colour, Carat, Clarity (why seeing tiny bits of plant material in it is a good sign!), and Cut (you want the whole log in the bowl).
Why “hard to digest” foods are actually a good thing.
What exactly IS the microbiome—and why we’re just starting to understand its impact for health.
How environmental factors can impact the expression of our genes (i.e. switch good and bad genes on or off!)
Why living ‘dirty’ is important for your microbiome
Why you don’t actually want to ‘boost’ your immune system
Probiotics versus diet for a strong microbiome
