Description

Jaws is something of a miracle. Even under the best of circumstances, it would have been a major cinematic achievement and surely a classic. When you learn of what struggles they had with production, this movie becomes a legend. The film was directed by a fledgling artist, Steven Spielberg. It is based on a novel by Peter Benchley, which was a massive success in its own right. Roy Scheider (The French Connection, All That Jazz, 2001: A Space Odyssey), Robert Shaw (A Man for All Seasons, From Russia With Love), and Richard Dreyfuss (What About Bob?, Close Encounters of the Third Kind) star in the film and work together seamlessly.
The premise of the film is so simple, it is elegant. Scheider once noted that the film was a success worldwide because it did not need words to articulate the story. This is apparent in everything from the special effects to the slower, more intimate moments such as when Brody interacts with his sons. If you have not seen it, please use this podcast as an excuse to do so, because it has aged remarkably well given the monumental changes in the industry since its release.
The "Hidden Track" this week is by Black Ferns, with their song "This Illusion." Be sure to check out their upcoming album. Devices, which will release in October. If you ever have feedback or recommendations on future episodes, please let us know at slasherspod@gmail.com.
