Description
The Context of White Supremacy hosts our 6th study session on the autobiography of Assata Shakur. Formerly JoAnne Chesimard, Shakur was a committed member of the Black Panther Party and the Black Liberation Army, convicted of killing New Jersey State Trooper Werner Foerster, an escaped felon, the first woman ever listed on the FBI's Most Wanted Terrorist List, and a writer. She continues to be the center of outrage as 60 faculty and staff members at Marquette University have signed a petition demanding that a mural depicting her likeness be restored. Our previous session detailed the obstacles to her receiving a "fair" trial. Assata described how her aunt asked specific questions to expose the antiblack sentiment of White jurors. She disclosed how reading accurate information on attempted counter-racists like Nat Turner and race soldiers like George Washington fortified her #BlackSelfRespect and empowered her to oppose Racism. She referenced the shooting death of 10-year-old Clifford Glover and included a scathing indictment of "white allies" who work to control black people. Keep an eye out for the influence of Christianity.
