The Context of White Supremacy hosts our 2nd study session on the autobiography of Assata Shakur. Formerly JoAnne Chesimard, Shakur was actively involved in the Black Panther Party and the Black Liberation Army, convicted of killing New Jersey State Trooper Werner Foerster, an escaped felon, the first woman ever placed on the FBI's Most Wanted Terrorist List, and a writer. As President Obama labors to improve relations with Cuba, Shakur's extradition has remained a key talking point. Last week's segment began with Shakur recounting being shot, shackled and tortured by cops who bragged about being Racist while calling her nigger. She believed Whites manipulated a black nurse to ask her for information while she was in her hospital bed. Shakur remained quiet, codified. She stressed that her black grandparents and demanded #BlackSelfRespect - which nourished her dedication to countering Racism. Poignantly, Assata recalls the warmth and love of her mother telling her that she made her proud. We'll keep an eye out for the influence of Christianity.
