Description

The Context of White Supremacy hosts the 6th study session on Coretta Scott King's 2017 autobiography, My Life, My Love, My Legacy. It's been eleven years since Mrs. King's death. Before her transition, the civil rights icon collaborated with acclaimed journalist, Rev. Dr. Barbara Reynolds. The New Orleans Tribune recommends that everyone read this book, describing it as a timely read for the current climate of aggressive and "emboldened" White Supremacy. Last week's session chronicled the Dr. King's Chicago campaign for improved housing and public service for black residents of the "Windy City." Mrs. King describes the abysmal conditions of their shabby apartment, which was a better property than what most black Chicagoans were offered. Mrs. King also documented the unabashed terrorism they were subjected to by northern Whites. Last weeks segment also detailed the April 4th 1968 assassination of Dr. King. Mrs. King provides an unflinching description of her young children finding out that their father had been killed. Harry Belafonte, Andrew Young and others offered generous support and encouragement to the King family. Former Attorney General Bobby Kennedy, who authorized COINTELPRO surveillance of Dr. King, delivered extra phone lines to the King house to help Mrs. King handle the extraordinary volume of calls. We'll contrast this text to other autobiographies covered on the book club - Maya Angelou, Assata Shakur, Malcolm X.
