The AI Teacher's Companion - Davor Mulalić
Chapter 1
Introduction to Artificial Intelligence in Education
Walking into the school five years ago, I never imagined that artificial intelligence would become such an integral part of my daily practice. Like many educators, I initially viewed AI with a mixture of curiosity and apprehension. Today, as I write this chapter, I'm amazed at how this technology has transformed from a buzzword into a powerful tool that's reshaping education as we know it.
The AI Revolution in Education: More Than Just Technology
Remember when having a smart board in your classroom felt cutting-edge? Now we're talking about AI systems that can adapt to each student's learning style, provide real-time feedback, and help us understand our students' needs in ways we never thought possible. But before we dive into the exciting possibilities AI brings to education, let's demystify what we mean by artificial intelligence in the classroom.
Understanding AI in Education: Breaking It Down
At its heart, artificial intelligence in education (AIEd) involves using advanced computer systems to perform tasks traditionally requiring human intelligence. Think of AI as an exceptionally skilled assistant—it processes vast amounts of data, identifies patterns, and makes informed decisions to enhance teaching and learning. What makes AI truly remarkable is its ability to learn and adapt over time through its interactions with educators and students, setting it apart from conventional educational technology.
Let me share an example from my role as a school principal. At our school, a while ago we introduced an AI-powered tool called Lesson Planner to support our teaching staff. I saw firsthand how this innovative technology not only saved valuable time but also significantly reduced stress for teachers, enabling them to focus on what matters most—delivering high-quality instruction.
One of the most significant outcomes was how the chatbot helped harmonize the planning process for both newly hired teachers and their more experienced colleagues. Traditionally, newer teachers often faced challenges catching up to the seasoned educators in preparing lessons aligned with our high standards. With Lesson Planner, this gap was bridged. The AI tool provided a consistent structure and guided all teachers—whether they were just starting their careers or had decades of experience—through the process of crafting tailored and effective lesson plans.
For instance, new teachers appreciated having a resource that could instantly generate lesson outlines aligned with our school’s curriculum and teaching principles. This allowed them to enter the classroom with confidence, feeling fully prepared and on equal footing with their experienced counterparts. Meanwhile, veteran teachers benefited from the efficiency of the system, freeing them to refine their practices and focus on mentoring their peers.
This harmonized approach had a positive ripple effect throughout the school. By streamlining lesson preparation and ensuring consistency in instructional quality, we fostered a more cohesive teaching environment. This, in turn, directly enhanced the learning experience for students, who now benefitted from uniformly high-quality lessons, regardless of who was teaching.
Moreover, as a principal, having such a tool in place reassured me that all our educators—regardless of their experience levels—were equally supported in meeting our school’s high standards. This reduced disparities, strengthened collaboration, and promoted equity within our teaching staff.
To provide an example, here is a QR code linking to one of the early written lesson plan versions created with the Lesson Planner. It serves as an illustration of how this technology streamlines lesson design while maintaining educational rigor.
By adopting tools like Lesson Planner, schools can ensure that all their educators—whether new or experienced—have the support they need to thrive, their students receive the quality education they deserve, and their institutions maintain a forward-thinking, collaborative environment.
At the start of integrating the AI Assistant, we aimed to align our school's curriculum with the best practices from Baden-Württemberg and Thuringia. These German federal states are renowned for their exemplary educational standards, serving as an ideal foundation for our lesson plans.
Instructions for Generating a Lesson Plan with this AI Assistant:
Enter Your Name: Begin by typing your name to personalize the lesson plan.
Acknowledge Terms: Confirm the acknowledgment of guidelines by clicking on the checkbox or button.
Choose AI Assistant: Select the Lesson Plan (for IDSS Teachers)
tool in the menu.
Generate: Provide the relevant details and click Generate to create your lesson plan instantly.
For example, input the following data into the assistant to see how it works:
Grade: 3
Subject: Mathematik
Teaching Unit: Römische Ziffern zum Schreiben von Zahlen bis 100
Duration: 45 Min
The AI will generate a comprehensive and structured lesson plan modeled after the high standards of these German educational systems, tailored specifically for teaching at IDSS.
After the assistant provides an answer, ask follow-up questions related to the lesson. Try to ask specific questions. Feel free to inquire about anything that interests you.
The Transformation of Teaching and Learning
The integration of AI in education represents more than just a technological upgrade – it's fundamentally changing how we approach teaching and learning. Here's how:
Personalized Learning at Scale
One of the biggest challenges we face as teachers is providing individualized attention to every student in our classroom. With AI, we're finally able to offer truly personalized learning experiences at scale. AI systems can:
Track individual student progress in real-time
Identify learning gaps and suggest targeted interventions
Adapt content difficulty based on student performance
Provide immediate feedback on assignments
Generate personalized practice exercises
But it's important to note that AI isn't replacing traditional teaching methods – it's enhancing them. As Šemsija, a high school math teacher I collaborated with, put it: AI handles the data analysis and routine tasks, freeing me to focus on what matters most: building relationships with my students and helping them develop critical thinking skills.
Data-Driven Decision Making
Remember the days of relying solely on periodic assessments to gauge student understanding? AI has revolutionized how we collect and use educational data. We now have access to:
Detailed learning analytics that show how students interact with content
Predictive models that identify students at risk of falling behind
Insights into learning patterns and preferences
Evidence-based recommendations for intervention strategies
This wealth of data helps us make more informed decisions about our teaching strategies and student support. However, it's crucial to remember that data should inform our decisions, not make them for us. Our professional judgment and understanding of our students' individual circumstances remain essential.
The Benefits: Why AI Matters in Education
Through the years of implementing AI in the classroom and collaborating with other educators, I've witnessed numerous benefits that make a compelling case for AI integration:
For Students:
Personalized Learning Pathways
Learning at their own pace
Content tailored to their interests and abilities
Immediate feedback and support
Greater engagement through interactive learning experiences
Enhanced Support
24/7 access to learning resources
Immediate answers to basic questions
Additional practice in areas of difficulty
Multiple ways to engage with content

Greater control over their learning journey
Development of self-directed learning skills
Better understanding of their learning style
More confidence in their abilities
For Teachers:
Reduced Administrative Burden
Automated grading of objective assessments
Streamlined lesson planning
Simplified data collection and analysis
More efficient classroom management
Better Insights
Detailed understanding of student progress
Early identification of learning difficulties
Evidence-based decision making
More effective intervention strategies
Enhanced Teaching Capabilities

Improved professional development opportunities
Real-World Implementation: From Theory to Practice
Let's look at how AI is actually being implemented in classrooms today. Here are some real examples from educators I've worked with:
Elementary School: Supporting Early Literacy
Emily, a third-grade teacher, uses an AI-powered literacy platform that:
Listens to students read aloud and provides real-time feedback on pronunciation
Adapts reading materials based on comprehension levels
Generates personalized vocabulary exercises
Tracks reading fluency progress over time
The impact was immediate,
Emily shares. "Students who were reluctant readers became more confident because they could practice without
