FOREWORD
Dear Rebels,
Growing up, art was my world. I was never far from my colored pencils and sketchbook. I drew my own dresses and dreamed of designing my own house. I immersed myself in digital worlds, from animated movies to interactive video games. I made handcrafted models using everyday materials, and I found any excuse to have my parents take me to the art supply store.
One day, my tech-savvy dad brought home a laser disc player. Laser dics were like DVDs that were the size of vinyl records, and we would spend hours watching behind-the-scenes footage of the special effects in the movies. I was blown away. These artists were like magicians! They used their art to create incredible worlds and transported the audience through time—from a land filled with dinosaurs to a futuristic city with flying cars—and I wanted to be part of that.
The suburb where I lived outside of Toronto, Canada, wasn’t exactly known for making movies. And when I asked about classes that combined art and technology, my guidance counselor said they didn’t exist! But I was determined to find a way to pursue my passions.
First, I found a web design studio in Toronto. I called them up and convinced them to take me on as their first-ever unpaid intern. A few days a week, I sat next to digital artists and learned how
