Life Lessons for West African Youth: The Essential Teachings of B.L.E.S.S. University - Ghana, Africa
()
About this ebook
Every effort has been made to make the reading basic and simple, readable and comprehensible to all of our students. We desire that it will be a REFERENCE BOOK that will be used and referred to in order to help our students grow and learn in life.
It has been the honor of a lifetime to teach these amazing African Angels (my kids) during these past few years. No greater thing have I ever done in my life, and no greater passion have I ever had in my life than to be able to work with them.
Michael Jean Nystrom-Schut
Michael Jean Nystrom-Schut has been writing/publishing for several decades, but trying to figure out the meaning to life’s deepest questions for much longer than that. With years of intense familiarity in education, business, personal study, and real-life experience behind him, the questions, in his mind, still vastly outweigh the answers. Michael has dedicated many years of his life piecing together the jigsaw puzzle of a balanced personal philosophy and worldview that has evolved to be both effective and reasonable. He claims it has saved him from a life of emptiness and despair. Failing to find this from the religious, science, and social communities, he set out on an eclectic path of personal enlightenment. Philosophy of everyday life is important for everyone. Michael understands this. He has actively written books in an effort to create a pattern of anthological thought that provides his readers with all of what they need to encounter life in a more meaningful and successful way. Michael now resides back in the United States - in the city of Indianapolis - having formerly spent large quantities of time thinking and writing in the pueblos and rainforests of Central America. His quest to leave a comprehensively written legacy of life is by his own admission, an endless one. Faustina Adzofia experienced her first writing encounter with the book, Africa! ...we love you. This is her second co-authored work with Michael. Being just into her 30's, she has been a seeker of God since childhood. As a young girl in the bush of Africa, she called upon God. She somehow knew that God was there, in her life and at work in everything she did. Faustina is a gifted photographer with more than ten years producing photographic magic. Her passion for this field is apparent in all she does. She has a mind that naturally boxes and frames things, and a system of thinking that makes her a sensible person. We anticipate more co-authoring yet to come. Like Michael, her passion for a philosophy of everyday life is something that affects her in life. Michael's Balanced Life principles of the mind, body, social and spiritual realms make sense to her. In their many hours of conversation, there has been much agreement between them on a view of life. Faustina has spent her entire life in Ghana. She formerly lived in Volta Region and now resides in the capitol city of Accra. Faustina's quest to leave a comprehensively life legacy is by her own admission, an endless one. Jane Adanma has been the primary teacher at BLESS UNIVERSITY (Classroom ONE) for the past two years. She is married to a lovely man also named Michael, and the two of them reside outside of Lagos, Nigeria. She has completed advanced studies in graphic and computer and technical design work. Her fact-packed lessons are followed carefully, five times a week. Jane is involved in providing meaningful and helpful information to her students that will round them out and give them more of a Balanced Life involving the mind and body, the social and spiritual. Jane is known as Rabbi Jane (though it is Baby Jane to her Ameican Daddy). The reason the term "rabbi" is used is that it is a teaching title attached to our loving Hebrew and Jewish partners. We choose to view ourselves as "Rabbi's" over teachers. This is since we admire and love the (Jewish) Parent of All Western religion, those rabbi's from the Hebrew tradition. The school is blessed to have Rabbi Jane, as her teaching reflects so much of what we desire for our beloved African students so near and dear to us each day. Jane's quest to leave a comprehensively life legacy is by her own admission, an endless one.

A BRIEF INTRODUCTION
I have always thought that our wants from yesterday were taken up by our needs from yesterday. Life marches on, does it not? And we are tasked to march to the drumbeat that is the steady march of our lives.
Over thirty years ago (1991) I wrapped up work on a laborious 340 page book entitled, Earth Dwelling (An Owner’s Manuel). The book contained 12 sections and listed 24 entries per section making a total of 288 separate puzzle parts. I suggested at the time that it could be used as a starter foundation for living out life on Earth as a Soul.
I was forty years of age at the time.
Ten years slipped by (2001) and I scratched out a follow-up book. This one was entitled My World: The First 50 Years. In this one, I created 15 sections and listed 365 entries in total, making a picture of the world readable in one year, with one concept per day.
I knew that I was quite changed and evolved from the 40-year-old version of Michael, and my earlier book with Earth Dwellling.
That next year, I did a very small book. I named it A Quiet Stream (2002), It marked for me a renewed beginning of a spiritual journey that I would never consciously abandon again. This little book from 20+ years ago is included here in Section Six of this book (Life Lessons) that you are reading now...
And so to continue, a few years past writing the My World book it was time to update my views and thoughts again - as I came upon 60 years of age! But first I had to stop having fun writing and work to make a few dollars to keep me off a cardboard box in the streets...
So I reluctantly watched the drifting of the next decade go by and hoped to attempt to update my thoughts of life again soon.
At just past 64 years (4 or 5 years late! darn!), my 10 year thing resulted in a couple of books (Their gods from 2015 and My heresies from 2016). These essentially detailed and compared the philosophy of spirituality with the philosophy of religion. Both books had grown in length and were about 800 pages each. I saw that I was really getting loquacious (excessively wordy!) in my advancing age! The books were longer and longer!
Whew~!
More recently, in celebrating my creeping and crawling up on age 70, and attempting to do a summarization work of all of this increasing thought, I produced still larger and larger books. It results in three giant (too giant!) volumes of philosophy and world view to consider.
They emerged in the form of Principals of Philosophy Volumes 1 and 2, and Foundations of Philosophy Volume 3. This last behemoth amounted to an absurd 1167 pages) and bookstores were asking for nearly fifty dollars a copy! (Don’t buy it~!)
My wife’s pithy comment to these three new encyclopedias were "OK enough already! Write something shorter! Something that humans can both understand and read!"
Hmmm. OK. Well, in so many ways she is the smarter of the two of us...
Now as I sit and review this present labor of love, I am amazed at how much of my world view and philosophy remain the same but also how much of it also radically differs (and dramatically so) from all earlier feelings and thoughts on life! I choose to think of it as that I am (as all of us hopefully are doing!) evolving and growing with time!
So...this book you are about to view now, Life Lessons (for West African Youth), serves as a textbook to help the amazing young students from my beloved Gold Coast area of West Africa (Ghana; Nigeria), to live a richly spiritual, and profoundly balanced mental, physical and social existence.
A disclaimer to some of you~! In the school and in the book I refer to myself as both Daddy
and Rabbi.
Why? OK. Simply put, I feel a father to my kids. So that makes me a dad to them (they started using the daddy term! not me!). And I am a teacher to my kids. That makes me a rabbi...
Now, we know that the beloved Jesus was seen as a rabbi. It is not known if he went to school for it. Nor did I. But my kids have embraced the title and now, so do I...
More explanation? OK. Jesus was seen as a teacher. I, too, ardently strive to be a teacher to my African Angels (as I refer to them). I wish to teach as the loving Jesus did. Not out of pride, or by any comparison (!), but out of love and respect for the man and the title.
I have not chosen this term loosely. To my students, preacher, priest or imam did not fit. As a self-proclaimed rabbi (teacher) it both challenges me and keeps my aspirations high...
Moving on. So, now! Just what to make of all of this?
As we age, life becomes more and more full of experience, thought, summarizations, senatorial urgings. In other words, now that I know all of this stuff, how can I keep quiet? And how also to remain relevant and vital with the young, while avoiding all psychobabble and redundancy if possible?
And how, for God sakes, can I ever remain quiet! Faith without works is not cool (somewhere in book of James, I think...).
Thus, this is my sincere attempt at sharing my passion for what I deem the Five L’s:
They are, for my Lord, for Learning, for Life, for Laughter, and for Love...
Will I see 80 years, such as did the beloved Gautama Siddhartha (aka Buddha)? Will I be allowed to write a Magnum Opus or Epoch summarization from all of this learning and knowing?
I can’t take that chance! My personal physician, the lovely Dr. AJ, says, Sure you can do it! We will do it together,
he says to me!
But as I age, I remind myself (and all of us!) that no one in life is guaranteed tomorrow. And no one is really a teacher; no one in life is a student; we are all just souls - souls teaching and learning as we go, at different levels of being...
So I will let it all hang out here. I will do so by giving you the following rendition of life, attempting to make it a condensed and simple Reader’s Digest account of how I (and two of my school loved ones and colleagues - Principal Faustina and Rabbi Jane) suggest we might choose to see the world while living in it!
All said, our recommended way to live is to work harmoniously and simultaneously towards four (4) main aspects of life and living. They are, namely, a Balanced Life of the Mind (mental), the Body (physical), the Social (people) and the Spiritual (God/Allah).
As such, shall we get on with it~?
-With much love: Michael Jean Nystrom-Schut (aka Rabbi Daddy~!)

A BRIEFER PRELUDE
Just a very short couple of thoughts on how this book is put together. Each Section (6 in all) are composed of 48 entries.
The first four Sections flow out as the school’s core teachings on MIND, BODY, SOCIAL and SPIRITUAL The fifth Section was provided to me (I like to think by God) at the end of drafting the first four Sections. And the sixth Section is a small book that I wrote over 20 years ago that I thought would go nicely here. It is called, A Quiet Stream.
Taken together, they are the primary text materials for our teachings at B.L.E.S.S University, based in Ghana, Africa.
Each of the first five (5) sections contain exactly ten (10) verses within. They read in a similar way as Holy Scripture. This is for ease of processing and also to make note of passages that are of particular long-term use to the reader.
This book, LIFE LESSONS for West African Youth, is dedicated to our students at B.L.E.S.S UNIVERSITY, which originated in the late summer of 2019. It is for their growth and continuing formulation of a World View that will sustain them throughout their lives.
Every effort has been made to make the reading basic and simple, readable and comprehendible to all of our students.
I am not just a white American man,
living 6000 miles and 6 times zones away from my African kids. I am one of them - one of you - since I even possess early baby-hood recollections of lifetimes lived in the Northern regions of West Ghana, Africa. I have sensed my whole life African encounters in previous incarnations. Many of them are very intimate.
I will always carry this love for my children with me, no matter where I go after this present incarnation of being. If I am able, I will request I be granted to guide my beloved children when I pass over through the great heaven-land portal. I pray I might Meet and Greet each one, as the time comes for them to return home from where our truest home in the universe resides - in the heaven-lands.
Love, always and forever,
- Michael Jean (Rabbi Daddy) Nystrom-Schut (February 2023)
