    Chapter one

    Nog for My Friend's Dad

A re you sure this is okay? I ask my friend, Michelle, as we pack for Christmas break.

My family decided to go on a cruise for Christmas this year. Unfortunately, the cruise left right before my last exam of the semester. I asked my professor to take the exam early so I could join my family, and the man must be Ebeneezer Scrooge himself. I was denied and had no place to go for Christmas. Of course, my family went anyway. They always do this to me and aren’t exactly the most reliable parents.

Hell, they won’t even help with my college tuition, even though they can afford it. I was forced to take out loans. When those weren’t enough, I enrolled in one of those medical research trials.

This one was easy enough, though. I just took some hormones and used a breast pump for a month before a trickle of breast milk dropped into the container. Now, I write down each ounce I express. I guess the medical trial researches how to help adopting moms induce lactation. I’m helping the world and paying my bills.

Thankfully, Michelle asked me to go home with her for Christmas. She lives three states away, but I told her I’d be happy to go. The other alternative was to move into the international student housing for the week and eat dining hall ham on Christmas. Michelle’s it is.

It’s fine. Just know that my dad may be depressed. Ignore it, she says, folding a sweater and stuffing it into her
