    1. Fancy Dress Party

It’s Billy’s twelfth birthday in two weeks, and he’s decided to have a fancy dress party. His mum bought some invitations, and he can invite ten of his friends.

On the school bus, Billy asked Lionel, his next-door neighbour and best friend, Do you think we can bring Alfred and our friends from the elf world to my party?

Lionel looked surprised, then answered, Why not? Then a funny look came over his face. He asked Billy, Will you tell your mother and father about him?

No, I don’t think so, said Billy hesitantly. It might be too hard to organise for Alfred to come.

Billy didn’t give this suggestion any more thought, considering it might be too tricky to organise. But Lionel decided to invite Alfred, Rosie, Apple, and Sprite Lily to surprise Billy. His plan was to meet them at the big gum tree just as the party was about to start and give them to Billy as a present in a bag.

    *****

On Saturday afternoon, as the party was about to start, Lionel went to the tree. He was dressed as a swagman in old clothes, with pieces of hay on his very tattered hat. He met them as they came out of the wombat hole.

Hi Alfred, I’m so glad you can come. I’m sure Billy will be surprised, greeted Lionel.

We’re really happy to come, said Rosie, her hair now bright yellow.

I’m really looking forward to it, said Apple.

Lionel told them all to get into a gift bag. I will carry you in and then hand you to Billy as a present. He gently helped them into the coloured paper bag.

Arriving at Billy’s place, Lionel saw Billy dressed as a pilot, surrounded by friends giving him presents. His grandma seemed to be helping by placing the presents on a nearby table.

Hi Lionel, greeted Billy as he arrived.

Megan, Billy’s older sister, was nearby and greeted Lionel.

Happy Birthday, said the smiling Lionel, giving Billy the bag.

Billy put his hand into the bag. Hey, watch us, screamed Alfred as Billy’s hand felt his wriggling friends.

Billy looked into the bag, really surprised to find his friends inside. Wow, said Billy. Glad you could come.

We will make ourselves invisible, said Alfred. This way, we can watch you at your party and be part of the fun.

Before Billy could hand the bag back to Lionel, Grandma stepped over and took the bag.

I will put this empty bag in the bin, she stated, looking into the apparently empty bag. Then she started walking towards the bin.

Lionel looked shocked, and Billy called out, No! Grandma! I really want that bag!

But Grandma, being deaf, did not hear Billy. She marched over near the shed and dropped the bag in the big garbage bin.

Lionel gasped and looked at Billy. What will I do now?

He walked over behind Grandma, who turned and started to walk back.

    *****

Alfred fell heavily into the bin, and the others seemed to fall on top
