I am Lynda Rees, The Murder Guru. My tag line is Love is a dangerous mystery. Enjoy the ride!©
So, why am I an expert at business practices? Let me explain that.
Before I became a full-time author, I worked for over thirty-six-years in corporate America for Procter &Gamble, a Fortune 500 Company. My careers there were in Marketing and Global Transportation and Logistics. I managed $50+-million-dollar budgets, negotiated ocean freight for the company’s international business and did marketing for several brands I’m sure you’ll recognize—Comet®, Spic ‘N Span®, Mr. Clean®, and Swiffer®, I also managed marketing operations for some of their top five US customers.
During this career, I wrote training and qualification manuals and taught customer service representatives and trainers. I wrote business proposals, marketing plans, presentations, sales, and training manuals, did copywriting, developed advertising materials, worked on television commercials and other media ads, and wrote contracts. I negotiated ocean freight rates for the company’s international shipping and worked with worldwide contacts, heads of the largest shipping companies in the world, and government and customs officials. This required me to travel extensively in Asia, South and Central America, and the Caribbean and to absorb the culture and customs of many counties as I interacted with international internal and external business associates.
My dual career was in financial investments and real estate. As V. P. of a financial services group, I held licenses with the Security and Exchange Commission. I trained and managed a large sales force that assisted individuals and small businesses to establish retirement plans. We sold securities, insurance, and mortgages.
For thirty-four years, I was a residential agent for the largest real estate company in the Greater Cincinnati Area. In this role, I helped people achieve their dreams of homeownership, negotiated deals, wrote listing and sales contracts, and assisted buyers to obtain mortgages in the ever-changing world of finance.
My love has always been fiction, so I continued to write what I enjoy without seeking publication. As I contemplated leaving the corporate world, my journey to become a fiction author became a reality.
My first two books were published simultaneously, one with a publisher and the other as an Indi-author. Both of my debut novels won accolades from RWA’s RITA and PFTHRW contests. Gold Lust Conspiracy is my award-winning historical romance. Parsley, Sage, Rose, Mary & Wine is Book 1 of The Bloodline Series, a spicy romantic mystery.
At the time of this book’s publication, I’ve gone on to publish ten books in The Bloodline Series, three in the trilogy The Reggie Chronicles, eight stand-alone mysteries, one historical romance, four children’s stories, and several non-fiction and self-help books.
I have found that most authors are versed and focused on the creative aspect of writing. This only makes sense. We get into the literary business because we want to share our stories with the world, whether they be novels or non-fiction. Once those stories are created, however, we need to make them available to the public.
Regardless of which road we take to market, we—the writers now become businesspeople. To do this, we must choose a publishing route. We may partner with a publisher or not, but it is our responsibility to guide the process and manage our careers as authors. No one is going to care about your creative work and your career more than you do.
It is time to take off our creative hat and put on our management that. You, as the author, are now the CEO of your company. You must now think of your book from a totally different perspective.
This requires a completely different mindset. There are many things to consider.
First of all, you must now think of your book as a product. It is an item you wish to position properly in the marketplace, at the right price, in the correct locations, so your target audience will find it and purchase it.
You love your book. Right?
