Introduction

He knew it would happen. Benny was sure. Mike knew he would do this. Benny could tell. Maybe he had planned all this.

Well of course he had. It was suicide.

Benny knew he had to call her. She deserved to know. He turned on his phone just as he got a message.

The message threatened him and everything he had worked to build.

He pulled his shirt tighter over his body. The night was chilly. Benny felt he should have put on more layers of clothing.

Ignoring the numbing cold, he dialled her number. 

Hey. I’ve got bad news. He said when she answered.

No shit. My house burned down. She said, sounding distressed.

Mike’s dead.

He paused to let that sink in.

Don’t make such jokes Benny. She admonished him.

I’m not. He killed himself.

I don’t believe that. I saw him two days ago... she began to say.

He died at dawn today. I’m sorry.

‘You’re kidding. Right? Tell me you are. Please."

I understand you’re upset.

Benny heard her mutter some words to herself. Words he could not understand. She sniffed. He could tell she was trying so hard not to cry with him behind the phone. After all these years, she really hadn’t changed a bit.

But he tweeted...

That was his last Claire.

She held back a sob. Her breaths were shaky.

How did he die?

Benny pulled his coat even tighter over his body.

He jumped before a train.

"How did he get to the tracks? He
