      When I returned home from work on Friday, the apartment was quiet and dark. Lara must be out, I thought. She was my roommate, we were just two twenty-something women, living in the big city together, but we didn’t really know each other. We were two ships passing in the night.

      She worked as a nurse and had odd, inconsistent shifts, and I worked long hours in the financial district. We rarely saw one another, and when we did, we conversed briefly, nodding and exchanging pleasantries, but with no deeper interaction. I enjoyed this dynamic — I was naturally an introvert, and so any chance to avoid socializing was my ideal. Lara kept the place clean, tidy, quiet; she was the perfect roommate. In fact, she was so good, I felt as though I lived alone.
