Preface
As I sit here thinking about how to begin this story, I am grateful for what I am learning in this process. Looking back on that day when my heart broke, I still feel that great hurt. It hurts so much to hear a child, my child, declare I am an unstable mother and an unreliable, unpredictable person. In my heart, I know that God sees the motives of each of our hearts and knows all truth. This story is about the reflection I have been doing about my life and where I am today as a result of some of my choices in this journey. I asked myself, How did it come to this point? Why did it get to this?
I was recently reminded of why hardships come along in our lives and where we go from them.
That the trial of your faith, being more precious than of gold that perisheth, though it be tried with fire, might be found unto praise and honour and glory at the appearing of Jesus Christ. (1 Peter 1:7)
I learned that the key to facing such hard times is knowing who I am in Jesus Christ.
I have been asked what made me decide to write a book. My life hasn't been easy, yet the journey I have walked has allowed me to become empathetic with others and even sometimes to help others in the midst of their journey. I am a blessed person today due in part to the things I have overcome, triumphed over, or simply been carried through them. My faith in God, my higher Source of strength and power, is what helps me to climb these mountains. It's hard to see the mountain tops when you're in the lowest valley, yet there is only one way to go now—up! It is then that you can reach up and take hold of the rope being held by God's hands.
I will lift up mine eyes from whence cometh my help. (Psalm 121:1)
I was asked about the title Reflections of a Rose. I will try to explain what I felt that God was showing me when He planted this thought within my heart. You see plants in general need water, sunlight, carbon dioxide, and soil to grow. Roses are known for their beauty as well as their fragrances, yet most will have prickly thorns. My life at times felt beautiful, yet the thorns or circumstances that would come along would cause me hurt and pain. It is through that pain that God would reveal His beauty surrounding my life.
Each plant starts as a seed or embryo, and that seed within me is called faith. It is the beginning of growth, a place where plants begin. That is exactly how my faith as a child began to develop and grow. For plants to begin to grow, they need good soils, and for me, that was the foundation of faith my grandmothers would demonstrate to me. Next, a plant needs water and sunshine. In my life, the water was often my tears while God's love would become my sunshine. Just as we need oxygen to breathe, plants need carbon dioxide that we exhale. God would often breathe fresh air back into my brokenness so that I could continue to develop and grow. The plant's root system is its anchor in the soil to allow it to stand firm and tall, and in my life, that root system became my relationship with Jesus Christ. If I kept in tune with what Jesus was providing, I found I was more able to stand up.
A plant's stem begins to form from the roots and grows to allow the leaves to form and grow which allows for fruit to grow. As I grew stronger in my walk with Jesus, I began to see other relationships develop along the way that would begin a new leaf growing in my life. The stem has the job of supporting the flowers or the fruit as well as holding up its leaves toward the sunlight. It is also the transportation system for the plant's food, water, and nutrients from within the roots. I began to see how important it would become to develop that strong stem so it could withstand those circumstances in my journey. The flowers and fruit are the products of what a plant grows, so as I began to grow, I soon discovered areas where Jesus was giving me fruit or His beautiful flowers. The root in a plant is its vital link between the plant, water, and nutrients. So it would become in my life, I
