    Chapter 1

    Rovim

The Sunbyurt Empire is a sprawling kingdom of ice. I crash to the ground in exhaustion. I spit up blood from the ice that shredded my lungs as I flew day in and day out. I knew that it wouldn’t be easy but days without food or water wore me down more than I expected. My body steams against fresh snow and slick ice on the beach I lay on, and I just let myself breathe. The glaciers surrounding the island provided little comfort the few times I tried to stop, and so I kept going. It’s been over a week, and now I am in an unfamiliar land, in a different Clans territory. Finding them is my only mission right now.

I hear rustling from the wood line, the ice on the trees, tinkling on the wind. I stare up into the face of a smaller grey dragon. Their scales blend in with the ice and snow, ensuring they stay camouflaged, even if they aren’t a mimic. I rise to my full height, slowly, to show I mean no threat, making sure to keep my head bowed. The dragon regards me shrewdly, ice blue eyes narrowed. He speaks in the universal draconic language. A sign that he is unwilling to open a telepathic connection with another warrior dragon.

    Why have you come here?

I bow my head even lower before responding. I seek enlightenment from the Adary Clan elders. It is the only hope I have of proving my worth to my mate.

A growl rumbles through the woods as another dragon reveals himself. I keep my posture lowered, even if it goes against everything in my being as a warrior.

What makes you worthy? The new dragon asks, even though I cannot see him.

My draconic is rusty, as I have barely had any contact with other dragon clans to use it. My name is Rovim, a warrior for Clan Imerie. Our clan took in a human years ago. I was assigned to be her guardian and now I am trying to prove I am worthy. That I am capable of the pure shift. I stand to my full height as I speak. I am not worthy of anything yet, but I hope one day, I will be. Now is the moment I will either have to fight to my death or be turned away. Without sustenance, I might not even make it back over the ocean to my homeland. The draconic sound of laughter echoes around me, bouncing off the ice. I wait for precious seconds as the dragons decide my fate.

Welcome to the Adary Clan, warrior Rovim.

The dragons lead me through the forest, in silence. I feel the mimic following close behind me. Everywhere I step, ice sizzles around me. I am a fire dragon, a warrior. My magic is suited for my job. I can destroy cities, forests and melt mountains if I wanted to. Yet here in this cold and unfamiliar land, my magic won’t help me. This is one of the most powerful clans for a reason.

I focus on my surroundings, even as exhaustion pulls me down. I focus on every turn we take and see the unusual terrain. Here the trees are willowy, with branches and vines that touch the ground. Small flowering bushes with bright purple berries cover most of the ground. Ice and snow create a bright and reflective area, even among the trees that should provide cover. The whole place is bright and welcoming, but I feel like it’s a façade. A way to lure the unsuspecting in, until the cold penetrates beneath your skin and slowly freezes you to death.

My lungs are still shredded, but as my body slowly heals itself, I let out a puff of smoke, in the hopes of warming myself. I have never been so cold in my life. Despite that, this area is one of the most sparkling and beautiful areas I have ever seen. The still, cold area glistens in the sun. There is a quiet beauty to the place. My breath is taken away as we reach some of the largest mountains I have ever seen in my life. They tower into the sky, hidden by mists of falling snow.

This is where you prove yourself warrior. The first dragon speaks quietly. You must fly to the highest peak and remain there for five days.

I’m shocked at his words. I’ve been flying for days! He cuts off my rant before I can finish.

You must find inner strength Rovim. This begins by forcing your body to endure more than you think you can handle. His voice echoes around us.

The mimic finally reveals himself, body sparkling like the ice around me, as he brushes past me. I don’t move, not wanting to provoke a dragon I can’t see. To think you call yourself a warrior. If you can’t find a way to be strong, even at your weakest, then you don’t deserve to be taught by us.
