About this ebook

Book Introduction:

"Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world." –Nelson Mandela

Imagine a child in a rural community, miles from the nearest library, exploring the wonders of the Great Barrier Reef through a virtual reality headset. Picture a single mother, juggling childcare with a side hustle, launching her dream bakery online thanks to user-friendly design tools. This isn't science fiction – it's the future we can create with technology in the hands of those who need it most.

The recent pandemic wasn't just a health crisis, it was a brutal education and opportunity gap exposed. Millions, particularly in underserved communities, found themselves locked out of the digital revolution – a society transformed by technology but fractured by its unequal distribution. This digital divide isn't just about access to devices, it's about access to the future.

"Tech Enabled Futures" isn't just a diagnosis of the problem, it's a blueprint for a brighter tomorrow. We'll delve into real-world stories of individuals and communities bridging the gap, leveraging technology to unlock their potential. This book is a call to action, fueled by research and the lived experiences of those navigating this changing landscape.

Imagine a world where a child's zip code doesn't determine their destiny. Where technology becomes a ladder, not a wall, propelling individuals and communities towards a more equitable future. Join us as we explore how to make this vision a reality.

Join me on this journey where each chapter reveals part of a blueprint for making technology a universal equalizer. From rural classrooms in Appalachia to the bustling streets of Southeast Asia, we will explore how innovation can uplift every community. Here, opportunity is not a luxury but a birthright, and the strategies we will uncover are your toolkit for forging this new reality.

For several decades, my passion has driven me to bridge the gap in educational opportunities through economic development and social ventures.  Fueled by my PhD in Economics from Howard University, I've actively pursued solutions to real-world challenges, proposing and implementing impactful initiatives.

My journey has been rich with diverse experiences.  From a tenure with the US government to a pivotal role at IBM where I honed my skills in large-scale systems planning and executive leadership education, I've gained a comprehensive understanding of complex systems and strategic execution.

As Dean of the School of Business at Medgar Evers College within CUNY, I leverage this experience to empower individuals and communities.  The School’s global engagement has been nothing short of inspirational. With active contributions in the UK, Pakistan, India, Kenya, and Bangladesh, our faculty have been sought after for research, student and faculty engagements, and  mentorship. This global recognition parallels our enhanced research and teaching culture, showcased through the hosting and co-hosting of influential conferences such as the International Conference on Business & Economic Development (ICBED)with our UK partners Center for Business & Economic Research.

Over the past decade in the role of Dean, I led the development of the Experiential Learning Lab (EEL). Established in 2015, the Experiential Entrepreneurship Lab (EEL) has been a catalyst for creating robust relationships through community, faculty and student development programs. Our students, organized into cohort groups, have immersed themselves in entrepreneurship studies across several countries, including Kenya, Chile, Jamaica, China, Japan, Thailand, Dominican Republic and Costa Rica.

"Tech Enabled Futures: Elevating Education in Underserved Communities" embodies a profound synthesis of my passion for social progress, a deep understanding of economics, and a comprehensive grasp of technological applications. This book presents a visionary approach to utilizing technology as a catalyst for ensuring equal access to quality education and nurturing a new wave of entrepreneurs who are informed, skilled, and empowered.

My commitment to fostering equitable systems and technological access was sparked during my doctoral studies, which focused on systemic equity. More recently, I have delved into the intricate interplay among technology, entrepreneurship, and education. These explorations have shaped my perspectives on how underserved communities can utilize technology not just as a tool, but as a bridge to opportunities for meaningful work, continuous learning, and the development of essential skills.

I have spearheaded an international collaborative effort to produce three seminal reference books on The Future of Work and entrepreneurship for underserved populations. As the lead editor of the first volume, "A Handbook on the Future of Work and Entrepreneurship for the Underserved," I oversaw a project that resonated widely with global scholars, prompting an overwhelming number of chapter contributions. The co-editors from this first volume were colleagues from Kenyatta University,
