An Introduction to Pastoral Care (Parenting in Boarding Schools in India) - Dr Amit Jugran
Preface
The book is an honest attempt to bring forward the functioning of Boarding Schools in India. Though the schools may seem to be working on autopilot to the common eye, there is a battery of unrelenting service providers shaping the future of many young children.
The role of a teacher is of immense significance. From being a parent figure to a guide to a catalyst bringing about changes, the teacher, as a true leader, effectively drives the community.
The volume also gives an insight into various other avenues related to running a Boarding School. There are chapters dedicated to various areas which make a Boarding School a wholesome place of grooming for the children. Every Boarding School is different in culture and has its share of legacy, passed on from generations to form the bedrock. However, almost every Boarding School has the same value system to produce citizens who are fair in their dealings, empathetic in their outlook, bold and courageous in their decisions and respectful towards society and the community.
The book is dedicated to all those Teachers, Housemasters, and Principals who have made a difference in the life of a child. It is dedicated to the profession, which offers a lifelong opportunity to learn, engraft growth, and the joy of achievement shared with love and compassion, many of whom are still held in great admiration by their students for the long-lasting impact those selfless teachers have made on their lives.
I am therefore confident that this volume may come as a handy reference for parents, teachers and all those who are persistently working towards our children and nation- building. The scope of work in a Boarding School is beyond being concise in this volume; however, it is an endeavour to bring forth the essence of a Boarding School as seen, experienced and observed by self.
Introduction
Boarding School is an adventure that some students cherish as a wonderful experience, which brings them new friendships, personal development, and opportunities to thrive. On the other hand, some find it arduous and emotionally demanding as they grapple with feelings of homesickness and a sense of not belonging. Despite these differences, the memories and experiences of a Boarding School are powerful, shaping students’ lives for years to come.
One of the exceptional features of any Boarding School is that students live on campus with peers who share their interests and passions. They can form deep bonds with their schoolmates and develop a sense of belonging that is hard to find elsewhere. Boarding School students typically create tight-knit communities that support one another academically, socially, and emotionally, making the experience more prosperous and rewarding.
From an academic standpoint, Boarding Schools provide a rigorous and challenging curriculum that prepares students for college and beyond. With access to superior resources and smaller class sizes, students can delve into their academic interests in more detail and receive personalised attention from their teachers. Furthermore, many Boarding Schools offer unique opportunities like internships, research projects, and study abroad programmes that enhance their experiences and skill sets. Some parents willingly trade the comfort of their children’s company for greater prospects, driven by a variety of reasons such as cultural norms, financial constraints, or personal values concerning the value of education and achievement.
In bustling urban areas, education and extracurricular activities carry a great deal of weight, with a plethora of opportunities readily accessible. However, pursuing these activities requires significant effort and investment of time from both parents and children, in addition to transportation logistics, tuition fees, and related expenses.
Parents perceive this package deal
of amplified prospects and activities as indispensable to secure a brighter future for their offspring. The parents’ current sacrifices may yield long-term dividends by offering their children a better chance at success and personal fulfilment.
Nevertheless, it’s worth noting that relinquishing quality time with one’s children could have adverse implications for their development and well-being. It is imperative for parents to strike a balance between providing opportunities and creating meaningful moments with their children. This could involve prioritising particular activities, engaging the entire family in events, and carving out a dedicated time slot for bonding and affectionate interaction.
However, the road to Boarding School success is not without its challenges. Being away from home for long periods can be tough, particularly for those students who are used to being close to their families and family members. Homesickness is a common occurrence among Boarding School students, and it can be hard to adjust to new environments and routines. In addition, the intense academic and co-curricular environment can be nerve-racking and demanding, and students may feel an enormous pressure to succeed.
Boarding Schools in India are typically associated with affluent families who can afford the high tuition and other expenses, implying that students attending such Schools often hail from a privileged background with greater access to academic and extracurricular opportunities.
While this may not be universally true for all Boarding Schools in India, it’s a common perception that cannot be ignored. Given their affluent socioeconomic background, students attending Boarding Schools in India may have more resources and opportunities available to them.
Therefore, it’s essential to take into account the economic status of students and the resources at their disposal when discussing the compromises parents make in providing their children with better prospects. For students from underprivileged backgrounds, the ability to access a broad range of opportunities may be limited by financial or logistical barriers, which can be alienating. Navigating social dynamics and finding a sense of belonging can be challenging when one feels like an outsider.
Despite these obstacles, many Boarding School students reflect on their experiences with a deep sense of gratitude and fondness. The friendships and connections they make can last a lifetime, and the academic preparation they receive can open doors to an abundance of opportunities. Moreover, the independence and accountability that come with living away from home can help students develop essential life skills and
