Chapter One
Recipe Selection
As the sun set, casting a warm glow over her kitchen, Mamaw Mel sat at her worn table, flipping through the pages of her beloved recipe book. Stained and tattered, the cookbook held a treasury of treats she had shared with her granddaughter Nae-Nae over the years. Mamaw Mel's eyes danced across the familiar recipes, eager to find something new to please the patrons of her bake shed in the community.
Among the pages, she came across the recipe for her famous brownies, which had been the biggest hit at the bake shed's opening. Made with the highest quality chocolate, perfectly cut by Laneigha, these brownies were infused with love, and everyone could taste it.
Next, she stumbled upon the recipe for lemon bars, the talk of the town. Mamaw Mel had been asked to cater events after word spread about these tangy sweets. However, she had to decline the expansion due to her commitment to the bake shed. Still, she encouraged everyone to visit the shed for new treats each week.
As Mamaw Mel contemplated how to top the grand opening, she yearned for something truly special to surprise the community. She recalled her friendship with Julie and Grace, the Cupcake Girls as Mamaw Mel called the two girls she had met while visiting a bakery in her hometown. They had shared their passion for baking and even given her a super-secret recipe passed down from their grandmother for Chocolate Turtle Cupcakes. Mamaw Mel cherished the bond she had formed with the girls, and their coffee meetings became a magical tradition.
Among the pages, Mamaw Mel's gaze settled on the recipe for Chocolate Turtle Cupcakes. She decided to make these cupcakes and invite the girls to her shed to honor their friendship. The memory of her trip to Chicago, where the Chocolate Turtle Cupcakes were invented, brought a smile to her face, and she made a mental note to gather the ingredients for this special recipe.
Lastly, she found the formula for Rainbow Sugar Cookies. Mamaw Mel had made sugar cookies countless times before, but she felt compelled to make them again and spread cheer in the neighborhood during these challenging economic times.
Determined, she quickly scanned the ingredients, jotted down a grocery list, and resolved to make her inventory of everything she needed before the night's end.
Chapter Two
Shopping Trip
With her recipes in hand, Mamaw Mel's heart felt light. She knew Laneigha would be just as excited. In the morning, they discussed their plans for the day and rushed off to the grocery store. Mamaw named off the ingredients they would need for their shopping trip. We’ll need sugar, eggs, vanilla extract, natural unsweetened cocoa powder, all-purpose flour, baking soda, shortening, caramel sauce, salted butter, and finely chopped pecans.
Mamaw, I think we still have some of those ingredients left over. I'm sure we have flour, sugar, and butter. We can get water from the sink as well. What do you think?
Laneigha asked, reviewing the recipe list Mamaw had laid out.
I think you're right, Nae-Nae. You're super smart,
Mamaw agreed. We'll need to get fresh milk since we don't want to use any that may have expired. We used the rest of the ingredients from the previous batch. We sure were busy!
The drive was short. They had finally arrived at the grocery store. Parking was plentiful, so Mamaw Mel pulled the van near the entrance. They got out and walked inside, pushing their cart down the aisles and gathering all the ingredients they needed.
Mamaw and Laneigha needed flour, sugar, eggs, butter, and vanilla extract, among other items, for their latest creations. Looking at her list, Mamaw Mel said, Okay, first on the list is flour. Do you see it, Laneigha?
Laneigha looked around and spotted the flour. Yes, there it is. How much do we need?
she asked.
Mamaw Mel replied, We need five pounds. Can you grab it for me?
Laneigha reached up and grabbed the bag of flour, putting it in the cart. What's next on the list?
she asked.
Mamaw Mel looked down at her list again. Next, we need sugar,
she said.
They went down the aisle to the sugar, and Mamaw Mel picked up a bag. Laneigha asked, Do we need anything else from this aisle?
Mamaw Mel thought for a moment. "Actually, we need vanilla
