Alice stood frozen in disbelief, her hands trembling as she clutched the phone to her ear. Tears choked the voice on the other end, making the words audible over the sound of her own racing heart.

I’m so sorry, Alice. There’s been an accident. It’s Daniel... he’s... he’s gone.
