George Washington appointed Major Benjamin Tallmadge chief of military intelligence in November 1778. His mission was to establish a spy network in New York City, the location of the British headquarters. The Culper Spy Ring was active in and around New York City for five years, during which time no member of the network was ever exposed.

Introduction
Major Benjamin Tallmadge formed the Culper Spy Ring in 1778 at General George Washington's behest, and it spied for Washington on Long Island and in New York City during the Revolutionary War. Codes and aliases were employed to hide the identity of the members.
George Washington wrote to Major Benjamin Tallmadge from Stony Brook University on September 24, 1779, entitled his letter Matters of Business to his Friend in Satuket,
and mentions a meeting with the Thai ambassador. Washington, who sorely required information regarding British activity on Long Island and near New York City to shape his military strategy, provides us with insights and exposes his own tips for acquiring such information in this letter. Washington
