    Deadly Enigma - Alvaro Figares

    Chapter 1:

    The First Murder

As the moon loomed overhead, casting an Detective Ruth Sullivan sat in her office at the Los Angeles Police Department, her gaze fixed on the whiteboard covered in pictures and notes. She was known for her relentless dedication to solving homicide cases, and her reputation preceded her. With a sip of lukewarm coffee, she awaited her next assignment.

The shrill ring of her phone cut through the silence, breaking her concentration. She picked it up, her voice steady. Detective Sullivan speaking.

The voice on the other end was urgent. Detective, we've got a murder. It's eerily reminiscent of the Jack the Ripper case.

    Ruth's interest was piqued. Where?

Third and Main. The scene has been arranged to match one of the Ripper's murders.

Ruth felt a surge of adrenaline as she grabbed her jacket and headed out the door. I'll be there in ten minutes.

The drive to the crime scene was tense, the city lights blurring past as Ruth's mind raced with possibilities. She knew this case would test her skills and push her limits.

As she arrived at the scene, flashing lights illuminated the dark alleyway. Uniformed officers barred the entrance and kept curious onlookers at bay. Ruth approached them, flashing her badge.

Detective Sullivan, homicide. Where's Dr. Grant?

An officer pointed towards a mobile unit a few yards away. He's already inside, Detective.

Ruth nodded her thanks and made her way towards the unit, stepping over discarded garbage and broken glass. She pushed the door open, the smell of death hitting her like a punch to the gut.

Inside, Dr. Ethan Grant, their forensic pathologist, busied himself with examining the victim's body. He looked up as Ruth entered, his brow furrowed. Ruth, this one's a real doozy.

Ruth's eyes narrowed as she took in the scene. The victim lay in a pool of blood, her body meticulously arranged to replicate a scene from the Jack the Ripper murders. This isn't a mere copycat, she murmured. This is something else entirely.

Ethan nodded, his voice grave. Exactly. The killer went to great lengths to recreate the Ripper's work. We're dealing with someone who's not only knowledgeable but also wants to send a message.

Ruth crouched beside the body, studying the wounds. The precision and brutality were chilling. We need to catch this sick bastard before he strikes again.

Ethan's gaze met hers, determination shining in his eyes. We will, Ruth. We always do.

Ruth straightened, brushing a lock of hair from her face. I need to gather more information. Find witnesses, review surveillance footage. Anything that might lead us to the killer.

Outside, the sound of sirens wailed as backup arrived. Ruth and Ethan exchanged a brief nod before she stepped out of the mobile unit, the weight of the case heavy on her shoulders.

A young officer approached Ruth, holding a notepad. Detective Sullivan, I've been interviewing witnesses. So far, no one saw or heard anything unusual.

Ruth sighed, frustration tightening her jaw. Keep digging. We can't let this bastard get away with murder.

The officer nodded and hurried off, leaving Ruth to survey the area. As she scanned the scene, her mind churned, searching for any clue that might lead them to the killer.

Suddenly, a familiar figure caught her eye. It was Sarah Thompson, the librarian from the local historical society. Ruth approached her, a glimmer of hope in her eyes.

    Sarah, what brings you here?

Sarah smiled warmly, her glasses perched on the edge of her nose. Detective Sullivan. I heard about the murder and thought I might be able to help.

Ruth raised an eyebrow. Help? How?

Sarah's smile turned enigmatic. Let's just say I know a thing or two about historical crimes. I might have a clue that could steer your investigation in the right direction.

Ruth's interest was piqued once again. She knew Sarah to be a wealth of knowledge, and if anyone could unravel the mystery, it was her. Lead the way.

Sarah guided Ruth towards her car, the detective's heart pounding with anticipation. They drove in silence, the sound of their own breathing filling the space.

Finally, they arrived at a modest house, hidden away from the noise and chaos of the city. Sarah led Ruth inside, where shelves lined the walls, filled with ancient books and artifacts.

Ruth's eyes widened as she took in the sight. Impressive collection, Sarah. But what does it have to do with the case?

    Chapter 2:

    Uncovering the Past

Ruth arrived at the secluded cottage, taking a moment to survey her surroundings. The weathered wooden structure stood nestled among towering trees, giving off an aura of mystery. She squared her shoulders, determined to make David Reynolds see the importance of her investigation.

As Ruth approached the front door, she could hear the distant sound of pages turning. She raised her hand and knocked on the door, her knuckles rapping against the weathered wood with a resounding
