Chapter one
Echoes of the Past
The abandoned warehouse district loomed like a forgotten nightmare, the sickly pale moon casting an eerie glow across the decrepit landscape. Dr. Adrian Halloway stood at the edge of the police tape, his heart pounding, cold sweat beading on his forehead. The flashing lights of the police cars painted a macabre kaleidoscope on the crumbling brick walls.
Dr. Halloway?
Detective Lucas Grant’s gruff voice cut through the night. Adrian turned to see the weathered detective approaching, his face etched with grim lines. Thanks for coming out .
Adrian nodded, his throat tight. Of course. Your message sounded urgent.
Lucas lifted the police tape, ushering Adrian under. I wouldn’t have called if it wasn’t.
He paused, his eyes darkening. It’s one you need to see for yourself.
As they navigated the labyrinth of debris and decaying machinery, Lucas briefed Adrian. Male victim, mid-30s. No ID yet. Discovered a few hours ago by urban explorers.
Adrian frowned, a chill running down his spine. Connected to the other murders?
You’ll see,
Lucas said cryptically.
They approached the knot of officers surrounding the body. As they parted for Adrian, the sight slammed into him like a physical blow. The victim lay splayed on the cold concrete, eyes wide in frozen horror. But it was the intricate pattern carved into his chest that stole Adrian’s breath—a grotesque latticework of scars, all too familiar.
It can’t be,
Adrian whispered, his voice audible over his thundering heart. This...this is just like...
The Claymont case,
Lucas finished grimly. Same MO, location, victim profile. Just like ten years ago.
Adrian closed his eyes, suppressing the memories that reared up like vengeful specters. The Claymont case, his darkest hour, a descent into madness that nearly destroyed him. And now, the nightmare was beginning anew.
Across the city, Elise Durant leaned back in her chair, rubbing her bleary eyes. In the darkness, the sickly glow of computer screens illuminated the cluttered office. She had been sifting through data for hours, chasing a hunch that refused to let go.
The murders dominated the headlines, each more grisly than the last. The police couldn’t understand. The public became terrified, and the city’s power players were scrambling to contain the fallout. But something about the official story didn’t sit right with Elise. Too many inconsistencies, too many loose ends.
She had pulled at those threads, unraveling a tapestry of corruption that reached into every shadowy corner of the city. Whispers of backroom deals, powerful figures with dark secrets, a rot at the heart of the city’s institutions.
And then, buried in a trove of leaked documents, she found it. An encrypted email suggesting a link between the murders and the city’s most influential individuals. Vague, anonymous, but enough to convince Elise she was onto something big.
She glanced at the clock. Nearly 3 AM. She should sleep, but her mind raced, adrenaline coursing through her veins. She couldn’t shake the feeling that she was on the verge of breaking the story wide open.
Elise reached for her phone, scrolling to the contact she needed. She hesitated, then hit the call button. It rang once, twice, three times before a groggy voice answered.
Elise?
Jake’s voice was thick with sleep. Do you know what time it is?
I know, Jake, I’m sorry,
Elise said, her voice taut with excitement. But I think I’ve found something huge. Something that could blow the lid off these murders and take down some powerful people.
A pause, then rustling as Jake sat up. I’m listening.
As Elise laid out the tangled web she had uncovered, a chill ran down her spine. She was stepping into dangerous territory, but she couldn’t turn back now. The truth was out there, and she was determined to find it, no matter the cost.
At the crime scene, Adrian knelt beside the body, examining the wounds. The precision of the cuts, the deliberate placement of each scar—a message, a taunt from a sadistic killer. Adrian’s stomach churned as he recognized the signature, the echoes of a past he had tried to bury.
The coppery scent of blood mingled with the musty odor of decay, a cloying combination that clung to the back of his throat. The concrete was cold and damp beneath his knees, seeping through his slacks. Somewhere in the distance, a siren wailed, a mournful sound that echoed the despair settling in his chest.
Durant’s going to be all over this,
Lucas muttered, shaking his head. She’s been hounding these murders from the start.
Adrian glanced up. The journalist? What’s her angle?
Asking uncomfortable questions, poking her nose where it doesn’t belong,
Lucas grunted. If she catches wind of the Claymont connection...
Adrian’s jaw clenched. The last thing he needed was a reporter dredging up his
