And this is him trying to get at the cookies. Damien’s voice held a weary laugh as he held out the phone with the picture clear on the screen: a young boy with pale brown skin and a cloud of curly brown hair balancing precariously on a kitchen counter. He actually did fall the other day and split his chin open and you should have seen me. I lost it. There was regret there. "It looks real cute now, but man, can he be a brat sometimes. Usually when we’re trying to sleep."

Jack stared at the photo, trying to swallow away the lump in his throat. Damien spoke of Liam with weariness and the cheerful irreverence of a parent, eager to remind Jack of the absolutely infuriating parts of raising a child. Jack knew that his omega was trying to make him feel better, remind him that he was able to sleep through the night and enjoy grown-up pursuits in peace…but there was no disguising the overwhelming love in his voice when he spoke of Liam.

Love that was too close an echo of Jack’s own. He lay awake at night and thought of his family: Imogen singing to Liam as he drifted off to sleep, Damien holding her as they, too, fell asleep in their big bed.
