    The Alpha's - Selina Coffey

    CHAPTER ONE

The sound of growling came from the living room, mixed incongruously with laughter and the babble of a two year old. Jack, frowning at the sunlight streaming through the windows, picked up his head and squinted toward the noise, trying to figure out what the sound was.

Are you getting up? Damien’s voice filtered plaintively from a tangle of blankets.

Probably. Jack let his head drop back onto the pillow with a groan.

Good. Will you do just one thing for me? Just on your way out of the room. Kill me.

I’m not going to kill you.

Okay. Damien pulled the covers over his head. Maybe just close the shades, then.

Jack pushed himself up and scowled over at the huddled shape before hurling a pillow. Up. He was just getting ready to push open the door, still naked, when a young woman’s voice caught his ear. And put on clothes, we have company.

A shirt and a pair of jeans later, he padded out into the main room to see Imogen laughing delightedly, sitting on the couch with one of the pack’s younger members, a young woman by the name of Emily. She ducked her head and blushed to see Jack, still overawed to be in the presence of the alpha, but he saw her sneak a glance as he dropped onto the couch by Imogen and gave her a lazy kiss.

    Did I hear growling?

That would be your son, Imogen informed him. She nodded to where Liam was playing with a set of toy trucks. Wait for it, he’ll do it again.

Jack sat back, watching the boy as he played. With hazel eyes; a strange amalgamation of his green, Damien’s blue, and Imogen’s brown; caramel-colored skin, and a deceptively angelic halo of soft curls, Liam was an undeniably gorgeous child...

And a talented one. As the adults watched, Liam shifted, in a tangle of chubby toddler limbs, into a tiny bear cub. He looked up at Jack and attempted a little growl, and Jack laughed. He watched as the boy shifted back, and immediately fell on his rear end. An affronted wail split the air, and Jack scooped him up, bouncing his son as he went to get coffee.

He could remember this stage all too well, himself. Learning a human form was difficult for shifter children. They were so much more competent and coordinated in their animal form. It made learning to walk and run and talk a trial. Liam was presently trying to make his fingers work properly, still scowling.

It’ll get better, Jack promised him, dropping a kiss on the boy’s head. He poured coffee one-handed and headed back into the main room. It should have been an inconvenience, having Liam interrupting his sleep and demanding to be picked up and played with and soothed every moment of the day, but Jack loved every minute of it. He had lived apart from Imogen and Liam for over two years before this, trying not to let his pack know that he was mated to a failed wolf hybrid, and he still cursed himself for it every day.

He settled at the table and grabbed some bread and jam, listening as Emily poured her heart out to Imogen.

I learned to shift really late, she was saying. I guess…I just guess I still feel like maybe the pack could do with a better shifter than me.

Jack held his tongue, waiting to hear what Imogen would say. Though everyone from the elders to the younger males had been bristling at his insistence on bringing Imogen into the pack, she had quickly become the confidante of most of the younger members, those who were struggling to live in a world that was ever more hostile to their kind. Raised as a full-blooded human, despite her parentage, Imogen understood the trials they faced better than Jack or
