For those who have ever felt lost in the shadows of grief, walked the difficult paths of understanding across the divides of hate and racism, or sought the light of love in the darkest of times, this book is dedicated to you. May these pages serve as a bridge back to the warmth of home, the comfort of heart, and the promise of healing. You are not alone in your journey.
Introduction
Welcome to Bridges Over Shadows: Poetry of Home, Heart, and Healing.
I am William Gomes, and it is with a deep sense of privilege and purpose that I introduce you to this collection, one that traverses the intricate landscapes of our most profound human experiences. This anthology emerged from a desire to explore the many facets of what it means to find, lose, and redefine the places and people we call home, to confront and transcend the barriers of racism and hate, to navigate the complex waters of grief, and to celebrate the myriad expressions of love.
Each section of this book—Home, Racism, Hate, Love, and Grief—serves as a testament to the resilience of the human spirit, the power of empathy, and the enduring strength of our shared connections. Whether you are turning these pages or lending an ear to its voice, you are embarking on a journey through the shadows and light of existence, across bridges built from the very essence of our being.
Home
delves into the unseen foundations and the myriad voices that compose the symphony of belonging. It speaks to the journey back to places touched by time, to the traditions that tether us across generations, and to the sanctuaries found in moments of turmoil. It is about the echoes in spaces now empty and the crossroads where diverse cultures meet under a single roof.
As we venture into Racism
and Hate,
we confront the divisions that fracture our world and the words that wound. Yet, within these reflections, there emerges a call to build bridges of understanding, to find harmony in our diversity, and to recognize the common humanity that surpasses the superficial lines that divide us. It is a call to action, to dismantle the structures of superiority and the veils of ignorance that perpetuate prejudice and animosity.
In Love,
we celebrate the infinite expressions of affection that transcend words, the alchemy that transforms the mundane into the magical, and the silent gestures that speak volumes. Love is seen as an echo that reverberates through time, a force that binds celestial bodies, and a language spoken through the beauty of nature.
Grief
invites us into the heart of loss, exploring the shadows cast by absence and the whispers of those we've lost carried on the wind. It reflects on the colors of mourning, the moment grief steals our breath, and the unseen threads that continue to connect us to those who have departed. Here, grief is not just a journey through darkness but a path towards healing, illuminated by the memories and love that endure.
Bridges Over Shadows
is more than a collection of poems; it is an invitation to explore the depths of our experiences, to find solace in shared understanding, and to celebrate the resilience that defines us. It is my hope that within these pages—or through the words you hear—you will find a bridge to carry you over the shadows, a light to guide you through the night, and a reflection of the boundless capacity of the human heart to heal, to love, and to find its way home.
With gratitude and hope,
William Gomes
The Ethereal Blueprint
In twilight's tender clutch, where shadow and gleam merge tight,
A hidden harmony hums, in the heart of the night's soft surge.
Not in brick, beam, nor the grip of mortar's might,
But in whispers of past, future’s flight, our souls submerge.
Here, laughter loops, limitless and light,
In silence, shared sorrows and mirth take flight.
The scent of yesteryears, in twilight's blight,
Lays the unseen bedrock, our hearth’s quiet knight.
This scaffold, ethereal, unseen yet felt in the night,
In the brush of hands, in gazes that ignite.
Memories woven, emotions in plight,
In its embrace, every heart alights.
Manifest in the mundane, in gestures great and slight,
Resilience of bonds, bending in the night, never to blight.
Through time's march, in every risk, in every fight,
Our unseen architecture, in silence, alight.
A juxtaposition, stark, 'tween stone and soul's flight,
Where structure's permanence meets emotion's might.
Here, in this contrast, our stories take flight,
In the unseen blueprint, our spirits unite.
It shapes our essence, molds our spine so tight,
In shifting sands, in darkness, it's our light.
A connection transcending time's bite,
An invisible thread, in complexity, bright.
Let's weave this fabric, rich with tales of delight,
Embroidered with joy, pain, through storms and sunlight.
For in life's vast tapestry, love's eternal flight,
In the ethereal blueprint, our spirits shine bright.
Beyond tactile touch, in thoughts and feelings' might,
In this unseen foundation, we find our plight.
In the ethereal blueprint, our souls, in light,
Yearn for home, in the endless night.
The Journey Rediscovered
Beneath skies that softly speak of past lore,
I tread again this long-lost shore,
Echoing steps in heart's core,
Landscape of youth, reimagined, sore,
Where light of then and now blurs evermore.
Jasmine whispers on the wind's breath,
Memories rise, specters of depth,
The canvas of youth, touched by time's stealth,
Colors deepened, contours left,
In time’s embrace, silent and deft.
The home that held dreams, now a sentinel sight,
A beacon in the fading light.
Windows watch, weary from flight,
The ghost of me, in twilight’s bite,
Seeking the essence, vanished from sight.
In gardens where secrets once wove their play,
The ancient oak stretches limbs astray.
Under boughs where shadows lay,
Seeking
