    July 9, Midnight

    You are ready, Miss Moore?

    Yes Sir. Yes, I am.

    You are certain?

I cast my eyes downward. Very certain.

Remind me of your safe word, Miss Moore.

My safe word is ‘lipstick,’ Sir.

Ah, yes. That is correct. And if you are truly in dire straits your word is—

    Red lipstick, Sir.

    Excellent.

I pause and reflect for a moment on those words spoken weeks ago. Test their realness by saying them aloud. Remember the feelings they evoked. How they might get me out of a shitload of trouble.

I may need to use them. Tonight.

But most of all they beckon and tease. My body thrums in response, quakes in anticipation. And my lips stretch into a tight little smile—

For those are the words that began my training. They could be the words to end my career.

    Time will tell.

    This journal tells my story...

    Ottumwa, Iowa

    June 2

The white envelope with my name typed neatly on it shook in my hand. I peeled back the flap, loosening the glue very carefully as I stood out by the county road next to our rusty mailbox while our mailman, George Flanders, drove off leaving a trail of Iowa dirt-road behind him.

I waved away the choking dust with a grocery circular from the local Fareway that George had also left, and turned so the dry-hot breeze coming off the fields would blow the hair out of my face. I slipped the black card with white embossed lettering partially out of the envelope.

Several months earlier I had applied to the Spy Training Institute of Muscatine and now...now here was my answer, tucked between the flaps of this nicely sealed little packet.

I was either accepted, or not. My stomach twittered and I felt a little nauseous. This was my way out. And I needed a way out.

Wanting to get on with it, I jerked the cardstock free.

    The orders were clear.

    Dear Ms. Sissy Moore,

We are pleased to inform you of your acceptance into the Spy Training Institute of Muscatine. You are to report to our headquarters on June 10, 8 AM. As we always think with the end in mind, your graduation mission details follow. Be prepared upon completion of your training, and this mission should you choose to accept it, to be fully inducted as secret agent, and duly recognized by our national headquarters, at the graduation ceremony to be held at the following location:

    City: Washington, D.C.

    Location: The International Spy Museum.

Point of Contact: The James Bond movie exhibit.

    Time: One o’clock A.M., July 10

Code Name: Lady Good & Plenty

Instructions: Wear black. We suggest leggings, a black T-shirt, a comfortable boot. Nothing else.

    Bring: Cell phone. Red lipstick.

Nothing else? Like what? Jewelry? Underwear?

The mention of a red lipstick was interesting as well but I dismissed it as a spy thing. You know, I figured we’d learn how to turn it into an explosive device, or hide documents in the small tube compartment.

Something like that. Sounded like fun. I am more than ready.

    But no underwear?

My heart does a little dance and I glance back down the road at George, who is a quarter mile or so away by now at the Hemple’s farm. June 10 is not even two weeks away. I may get out of the summer canning. Or taking the sheep to market.

I am ready. Soon I will be a spy!

    Finally time to write

I am enjoying the physical aspects of this training much more than the paper and pencil tests I must take. There are challenges, to be sure, but I am proving to myself and the others that I am a force to be reckoned with—I’m a strong farm girl who grew up with boy cousins and a stern, control-freak uncle. I can handle the physical challenges,
