The 1% Youth - Zachary Donovan
The Secret of getting ahead is getting started.
- Mark Twain
Throughout this book, I will reference the word success on numerous occasions. I want to clarify and understand how I view the meaning of success and how you should see success in your life. Do not, under any circumstances, skip this chapter. Understanding and articulating the definition of success, not only in the setting of this book but in your own life, is vital to your success as a young person.
The etymology of the word success dates back to the 1530s. Over the 500 years that the word success
has been used, it has generally retained its meaning. The word comes from the Latin successes,
which means result, outcome, or termination of the affair.
Since the 1530s, the word has grown and transformed to have two meanings in most conversations.
The first modern meaning has mostly stayed the same since the word's original conception. The first meaning is a temporary victory or moment of accomplishment. It is simply the termination of an event.
The second definition is a state of being successful. It describes being a successful human being. If you are successful, this means that you are a person who exceeds what ordinary people might accomplish. This means that you have the life you want, the influence over others that you wish, and access to tangible and intangible things that are valuable beyond the simple pleasures of this world. In this definition, success is a lifestyle. Success, in this definition, means that you have expanded past the boundaries set by the universe and that you are continuing to expand. With this mindset, you will be content with the life you have built, but you will also constantly seek more greatness.
For our purposes, success will not be a one-time endeavor or the outcome of some arbitrary goals. Our definition will be a state of being where you are great, feel great, have done, and continue to do great.
At times, the world and its forces will attempt to push successful people back, but these individuals overcome. Not only can these individuals overcome adversity and the opposing forces of this world, but they can also provide for others and build the life they want.
What constitutes a successful person will change from person to person; some are successful leaders, entrepreneurs, or athletes. These people are all successful, and the only things differentiating them are the driving forces that caused their success. The definition of a successful person will also differ between age groups. Successful young people work hard; successful older people enjoy the fruits of their hard work, build a legacy, and care for their families.
If you want to succeed and become successful, you must use this book's lessons to your most significant advantage. Begin with valuing success because attaching value to being successful is vital in all realms of human endeavor.
If you want to be successful, you must value success. Success should be important to you and remain your #1 priority. Often, we allow distractions to cloud our focus and vision; these distractions masquerade as valuable and worth our time. To measure what you value, you should calculate what you spend your time on.
If becoming successful is valuable to you, you should make it your #1 priority and spend time increasing your level of success. Our world is filled with chaos, which might sometimes place some items as our #1 priority; often, these distractions should be eliminated.
Your success and the creation of a successful lifestyle must be valued. Nobody else will love the lifestyle of your success. It is up to you and you alone to push yourself towards becoming successful. People only benefit from becoming successful themselves, so do not rely entirely on others for your success.
Remember these two things:
Your level of success in life is up to you.
Becoming successful must be your duty. Begin to think of your success as your purpose and mission. It is your quest to become great, and you must own your success. It would be best if you never minimized the importance of becoming successful. Do not let others knock you down or encourage you to slow your pace. You must run as a successful person far past the naysayers and bullies; you must run toward your success.
To succeed, you must know what drives you to succeed and enact the life you want.
Do you envy, aspire to be, or look up to individuals you would want to live like? We all feel as though there are people above us and below us. Humans are urged to become or feel great, whether attributed to hierarchy, narcissism, gut feeling, or any possibly quantifiable metrics.
Despite differences in culture, geography, race, belief, or any other affecting variable, every human who has ever walked the earth has wanted to become important. This is the root of all human evil and the drive behind our greatest heroes. However, attaining importance and significance as an individual part of a species with billions of members can be challenging.
Few names, like Albert Einstein, Mahatma Gandhi, Alexander the Great, Marcus Aurelius, and William Shakespeare, echo through our histories.
In this book, I will discuss the factors that made important people remembered and celebrated, and I will include tips and rules for
