Speed Reading - Julien Stevenson
Tips For Focusing And Being A Better Reader
After you've learned what speed-reading is and how to perform it, you should be aware of the best ways to improve your speed-reading skills and experience.
When reading any material, you are more likely to make mistakes that will harm your speed-reading ability.
Speed reading is not about beginning to end, but point-to-point.
While reading a book, you should highlight the most significant topics, but this does not imply that you must read them in any particular order. In fact, you should be able to skim over sections of the book that are unneeded. Most books have a nice point or two, but reading every page is superfluous.
Use a Pacing Tool.
Use your finger or pencil to guide you along the lines of the book you're reading, allowing you to go as quickly as possible. While reading, your eyes move in a quick and uneven pace as they shift focus from one spot to another. So reading is a sequence of jumping glimpses. Using a visual guide can help you avoid relapse.
If you move your pacing tool quicker than your typical reading rate, your eyes will be able to record text faster than your brain can absorb the words on the page, thereby eliminating the habit of subvocalization.
Free yourself from all distractions and interruptions.
Remove your earbuds and kick those friends out of the room who are distracting you from your reading. When attempting to concentrate on what you are reading, make sure you are in a comfortable position and in a peaceful environment. Distractions and interruptions can dramatically alter your reading patterns, resulting in a decline in text comprehension.
Chunk It Up
As we discussed in chapter one, chunking is the process of reading more than one word at a time. By organising words in blocks as you read, your mind may comprehend ideas and visual imagery rather than individual words.
Do not go back.
When speed-reading, avoid moving backwards. The aim is to keep moving forward rather than stopping to review things. Rereading significantly reduces the efficiency of your reading time. So keep moving forward!
Use your imagination: Visualise
Visualising what you read is an excellent way to improve productivity. Consider the ideas on the page as mental pictures. A large portion of the human brain is dedicated to processing information visually, resulting in the brain's quickest circuits for processing information.
Create mind maps to visually comprehend the information, then repeat the process in your thoughts while reading.
As you practise and improve your speed-reading skills, you will realise how many opportunities it opens up.
Reading Newspapers
Reading newspapers should be approached with the same level of preparation as any other significant subject. The five-step technique is still useful for reading newspapers, however not all steps must be employed in the same order. To boost your reading speed while reading newspapers, follow the methods below:
Make your purpose clear: Are you reading to get an overall understanding of the themes, or are you interested in a specific topic?
Previewing and passively reading: Go through the entire newspaper, reading the headlines and the first paragraphs of each story. Make a mark around the items you wish to return to later.
Actively Read: Read the selected articles to gain a better understanding of the topic.
To efficiently read newspapers, follow the methods outlined below:
Set a time restriction that you deem reasonable.
Read the continuations of the stories, which are frequently found on other
